Kirsten - Grangetown - Music Theory

Methodology

My name is Kirsten (known as Kirstie) and I am a friendly and professional cello teacher based in Cardiff. I am a Master's graduate of the RWCMD and I also have an ABRSM teaching diploma. I teach cello pupils of all abilities.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the cello, as well as aural, music theory and performance development. I am also training to be a teacher of the ITM Alexander Technique.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for 6 years where I obtained a Bachelor of Music degree (BMus) and Master of Music degree (MMus). I have an ABRSM teaching diploma. I am also training to become an Alexander Technique Teacher using the Interactive Teaching Method (ITM); Although I am not qualified to teach Alexander Technique yet, the concepts that I study give me great insights into learning, teaching and performance and influence my cello teaching a lot. Over the years I have developed successful teaching methods that help my students to progress quickly and to really enjoy playing.

- How much do you charge?

The first lesson is always free of charge.

Thereafter I charge £16 for a generous 30 minute lesson, or £14 as a student or sibling discount
For an hour lesson I would charge £32. 45 Minute lessons are also available at £24.

- Where do you teach?

I tend to teach at my house, where I have a spatious music room. I also have my own transport and am able to travel to your house if this is more convenient.

- When are you available?

I currently have available teaching slots throughout the week and can teach daytime or evening.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and abilities which may include absolute beginners or people picking up the instrument again after years of not playing.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

If my students wish to take exams, which they don't have to, I work towards the Trinity exam board grades 1-8

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Whether you are a beginner or you already have some experience, I feel that my task as a teacher is to help a student to get the most enjoyment and success that they can out of learning the cello. My lessons are creative, varied and tailored to the learning style of the pupil. Music wants to always be expressive and fulfilling, so I aim to give my students a strong technical understanding that they can use to let out their musicality to the best of their potential.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching the cello for 10 years as a private tutor. I've worked as a deputy peripatetic teacher with the Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service and as a tutor at the Junior Music programme at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I also briefly taught in Kampala Music School in Uganda in the summer of 2009.

I have started many absolute beginners (both adult and children) on their journey with the cello. I particularly love teaching adult beginners and strive to give them the opportunity to enjoy playing the cello by using rewarding pieces of music in my teaching, rather than just the children's nursery rhymes which are so common in beginner cello books. I also teach more advanced pupils who often need guidance in changing some of their ideas about cello technique and making their practice more simple, effective and musical.

I enjoy reading, researching and thinking about music pedagogy and cello teaching, and also wrote my undergraduate dissertation on effective instrumental practising. I bring this knowledge and my own experiences to my teaching and love to inspire and be inspired by my pupils.
My other passion is performing and I regularly perform as a freelance musician, which includes orchestral playing, chamber music and playing for functions. As well as classical music, I love to perform traditional folk music with my folk duo, Pegbox.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes I have an up-to--date DBS/CRB certificate

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at the RWCMD in Cardiff with Alice Neary, Penny Driver and Joseph Crouch.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians
