I am also training to become an Alexander Technique Teacher using the Interactive Teaching Method (ITM); Although I am not qualified to teach Alexander Technique yet, the concepts that I study give me great insights into learning, teaching and performance and influence my cello teaching a lot. Over the years I have developed successful teaching methods that help my students to progress quickly and to really enjoy playing.

- Do you have a personal message for students?
Whether you are a beginner or you already have some experience, I feel that my task as a teacher is to help a student to get the most enjoyment and success that they can out of learning the cello. My lessons are creative, varied and tailored to the learning style of the pupil. Music wants to always be expressive and fulfilling, so I aim to give my students a strong technical understanding that they can use to let out their musicality to the best of their potential.
Kirsten is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching the cello for 10 years as a private tutor. I've worked as a deputy peripatetic teacher with the Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service and as a tutor at the Junior Music programme at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I also briefly taught in Kampala Music School in Uganda in the summer of 2009.
I have started many absolute beginners (both adult and children) on their journey with the cello. I particularly love teaching adult beginners and strive to give them the opportunity to enjoy playing the cello by using rewarding pieces of music in my teaching, rather than just the children's nursery rhymes which are so common in beginner cello books. I also teach more advanced pupils who often need guidance in changing some of their ideas about cello technique and making their practice more simple, effective and musical.
I enjoy reading, researching and thinking about music pedagogy and cello teaching, and also wrote my undergraduate dissertation on effective instrumental practising. I bring this knowledge and my own experiences to my teaching and love to inspire and be inspired by my pupils.
My other passion is performing and I regularly perform as a freelance musician, which includes orchestral playing, chamber music and playing for functions. As well as classical music, I love to perform traditional folk music with my folk duo, Pegbox.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I have an up-to--date DBS/CRB certificate
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the RWCMD in Cardiff with Alice Neary, Penny Driver and Joseph Crouch.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians
I absolutely love our lessons together and really look forward to them each week. I've only been playing for a few months but I can already see and feel real progress in leaps and bounds. Kirstie sees your potential and knows just how to tweak and improve your technique to get the best out of you. As someone who is a bit of a perfectionist and gets quite wound up over little imperfections she's really helped me turn it around and see not only my cello lessons, but my life, in a different light.
