Interview with Kitty

QUESTION 01 | 08
Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
Kitty — I don’t teach languages as such, only language skills and English linguistics, but I love learning new languages, and I was very inspired by my French teacher at school. I also had a very good teacher of Dutch in Sheffield where I come from originally.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Kitty — The English language is probably encapsulated by the Queen, really, so I guess that is why it is referred to as ‘the Queen’s English’ when it is Received Pronunciation.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
Kitty — Live for the moment
QUESTION 04 | 08
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Kitty — It is a lingua franca in many countries around the world and it means I can communicate with a lot of different people worldwide.
QUESTION 05 | 08
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Kitty — There are a lot of idioms in English that are difficult to understand, plus English grammar rules are a bit complex and not consistent. Pronunciation is hard as the language, it has so many different roots and so many borrowed words.
QUESTION 06 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Kitty — I used to teach on the pre sessionals at a university near where I live, which is in Plymouth, and the students there were very friendly. They were a bit homesick so one day we borrowed a lecture theatre and held a karaoke session in out ‘spoken language’ afternoon lessons, which was wonderful and it allowed people in the group to really bond.
QUESTION 07 | 08
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Kitty — I find being an English language expert helps to make new friends and acquaintance in many other countries.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof in language?
Kitty — Being a native speaker and understanding how other languages impact on the use of the target language.
