Kitty - Plympton - Violin lessons for experienced performers preparing for auditions or specific performances. I also accompany where required.

Methodology

I teach in my own home in Wembury, Plymouth PL9 Monday to Thursday 9am -5pm and evenings are available where requested.

I work with the individual and tailor my approach to suit the learning style of the student; together we agree upon the target outcomes and then break it down into manageable and recognisable steps. In violin teaching, I have a holistic approach and pay attention to the movement and flow of the whole body using strategies from Alexander Technique and Yoga.

I do feel that learning should be engaging and enjoyable so I try to make the lessons fun.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have over 30 years' experience of teaching, across all age ranges and for a range of purposes. For most of this time, I have played violin semi-professionally and more recently I have been performing professionally across the UK as a violinist with a gypsy jazz trio called Tanzanite Manouche.

I am a member of the Musician's Union.

Interview with Kitty

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?
Kitty — I was 7 when I was first invited to take up violin lessons at school. I have not looked back since then!
QUESTION 02 | 08
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Kitty — I can listen to Gilbert and Sullivan’s music on a loop, especially the Mikado, and it never drives me crazy.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Kitty — The most difficult would probably be a violin concerto, perhaps the Korngold for example. It would also be quite riveting.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Kitty — The harp, I think. It is designed to be played in different keys and the foot pedals have to be combined with the strings that you need to pluck in a certain way and order.
QUESTION 05 | 08
What are your keys to success?
Kitty — Lots of practice, especially scales and arpeggios, a healthy lifestyle to keep your body fit and your mind clear, and plenty of opportunities for honest feedback.
QUESTION 06 | 08
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why. .
Kitty — Django Reinhardt as he was an individual who developed a style of his own that is now recognised as such, despite only having two fingers on his left hand.
Itzhak Perlman as he is my favourite violinist and always has been.
Luciano Pavarotti as he was the best tenor that ever lived
QUESTION 07 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Kitty — I loved music school and could share a few happy memories. Perhaps one of the best was when our conductor conducted Rachmaninov’s 2nd symphony all the way through without a score.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Kitty — Understanding that performers have to develop their own individual style and giving them advice and feedback but not trying to turn them into versions of myself.
