« Miranda is an excellent drama teacher! She really built my confidence in performing solo, giving me constant constructive criticism, and giving lots of helpful advice on where I could improve but also making me feel confident enough to experiment with a variety of different techniques! Miranda is a very passionate teacher and was one of the people who inspired me to take theatre/drama/acting further and pursue a career in which drama is involved. Highly recommend! »

Private Acting and Drama lessons for LAMDA exams and Drama School Auditions

Methodology

Current availability:

After school times are limited so please enquire - I also have time in the day during the week for drama school audition students.

I am teaching until early September when I will be on Maternity leave until 2020. My current last entry for LAMDA is for 14/15th Sep which may appeal to students wishing to have lessons in the Summer.

I currently do not teach from home - only at student's houses or skype.

I am a professional actor and have taught drama for companies such as Stagecoach for many years. This is my 8th year of coaching and submitting students for LAMDA exams in Acting, Verse and Prose, devising and occasionally musical theatre. I trained at Guildford School of Acting.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach LAMDA exams in Acting, Verse and Prose, Devising and Musical Theatre (MT only for under 12s). I have a 90% Merit and Distinction rate with several at high Distinctions.

I can coach you for your Drama school auditions plus with much success as well as school drama scholarships.

N.B I am a drama teacher and professional singer so I can help with acting through song for auditions but I can suggest great singing teachers if technical singing help is what you currently require.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

MA Musical Theatre with Merit - Guildford School of Acting (validated by University of Surrey)
BA (Hons) Acting 2:1 Bretton Hall (validated by the University of Leeds)

98% Grade 5 Music Theory, Distinction at Grade 8 Gold LAMDA Medal, 97% LCMM Musical Theatre Grade 7

- How much do you charge?

I come to you. If you are Amersham based solo lessons are: £15 for 30 mins, £20 for 45 mins and £25 for 60 mins.
For working in pairs I split the cost - we may do duo work or a combination exam where you do a duo and solo piece each.

Travel will be added if you are further afield so please enquire.

- Where do you teach?

I am happy to travel to:

Amersham, Chalfont St. Giles, Chalfont St. Peter, Little Chalfont, Gerrards Cross, Denham, Wendover, Berkhamsted, Tring, Great Missenden, Prestwood, High Wycombe.

If you are looking for a drama group that includes LAMDA as an additional activity I teach for Stagecoach Amersham (Our Lady's School, Chesham Bois) so feel free to ask about that. Our Further Stages group is for 15 - 19 year olds including working towards the Bronze, Silver and Gold LAMDA exams which hold UCAS points.

- When are you available?

I currently have slots of Monday and Tuesday after school for Lamda - in addition I have some day time availability for young adults/adults auditioning for drama schools.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I currently teach 5 year olds - adults

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

LAMDA drama exams from Introductory level up to Grade 8 (Bronze Silver and Gold hold UCAS points).

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have yet to start this as there's been no demand and seeing the person performing live in front of you is so important but I can of course offer consulting sessions on Drama school auditions such as piece/song choices and how to write a personal statement as it's quite different one you'd write for UCAS.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am happy to help with everything from the fear of being passed the book to read aloud from in class to coaching an important speech or drama piece. I can also advise on musical theatre audition songs.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching for 'Stagecoach' Amersham for 8 years. In the past I have also taught for Gerrards Cross based, 'Vocal Performance Academy' and as an after school drama club teacher for 'Flip Theatre Arts' in Watford and for BOO in St Albans.

I have been coaching LAMDA exams privately and through Stagecoach throughout this time with an incredible rate achieving high merits and distinctions. With 'Vocal Performance Academy', I have coached students taking Musical Theatre exams as well as auditions for school and amateur productions.

My students have gone onto attending further training at bodies such as: Italia Conti, Millenium Dance, Performers College and various University drama courses.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes

- Where and with whom did you train?

Bretton Hall and the Guildford School of Acting achieving my BA (Hons) in Acting and MA in Musical Theatre

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Equity and Spotlight

- Tell me about some of your current students.

We just had 46 students at Stagecoach Amersham achieve fantastic LAMDA results plus I've seen improvements in technique and confidence in class - it's not just about the mark but about the process.

I have helped several students achieve scholarships at Pipers Corner and Berkhamstead School.

An interesting thing to note is that one of my LAMDA students went on to University to study Law, a subject she found she was seen for because of LAMDA being on her CV.

Miranda's CV

I am a professional actress with training from GSA and Bretton Hall and I now make a living as a professional actor and singer as well as teaching students privately and with Stagecoach Amersham and Thame.

I have 8 years of experience of LAMDA exams with an incredibly high park/mark rate.

I always encourage children and young people to think for themselves from choosing their own pieces from my selection and finding ways to voice why that piece appeals to them to analysing characters' motives and speech. Drama should open you out as a person and increase critical and emotional thinking - vital for for communication in any job.

Interview with Miranda

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you start practising? How did this passion find you?
Miranda — I was first interested in drama aged 7 when I went to a Summer Holiday workshop and it grew from there - expanding into singing, guitar, piano, tap, ballet and modern dance lessons alongside performing in Youth productions such as 'Oliver' throughout my school life. I, of course, decided to take this passion further and go on to train at drama school in my late teens/early twenties.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Which artists or works affect you the most?
Miranda — Initially, it was watching actors like Judy Garland and Katherine Hepburn on film that influenced me - now I look to stage performers such as Samantha Spiro, Imelda Staunton or film and TV actresses including Kristen Bell and Mindy Kaling. I love actors that make their own work and stand up for what they believe in.
QUESTION 03 | 08
What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?
Miranda — Aside from talent, you need to have focus, tenacity and good self-care. Acting isn't an easy life and you will spend a lot of time working your 'side-hustle' to fund the performing life. Motivation can be hard to muster after a while but always find ways to keep your passion alive. There is also strength in realising the life-style of the job isn't for you but you'd like to continue your skills as an amateur as many of my friends have done in recent years.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?
Miranda — Break it down into manageable chunks so you don't get overwhelmed. Funnily enough, business books and videos can offer great transferable advice. If acting is to be your job, you have to treat it as a business.
That being said, if you are more interested in furthering your talents because of passion/ improving self-confidence I would say, making sure you have a mixture of solo and group performing/learning opportunities is paramount as acting is about being an ensemble. You should also go to see as much theatre as you can - not just big West End Musicals. Go to see new writing at the Royal Court or Bush - see a solo show at the Soho theatre, some physical theatre at the Lyric or even dance and opera. Really explore the arts.
QUESTION 05 | 08
How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?
Miranda — I love theatre/film/TV because of the storytelling - we learn so much from watching other people's walks of life. I can feel emotional just from the Overture of a musical or can feel impassioned and angry watching a political play - it's all about connection.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?
Miranda — I'm very proud of every show I've directed - sometimes in very short, stressful time frames and I'm proud of every new skill I learn. I'm currently developing my voice-over work.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?
Miranda — I'm always over the moon when the hard work pays off - when a high mark or entrance into drama school is achieved, particularly if they started off having a bit of a self-conscious 'front' that slowly goes during the course of performing as the new character who is unlike takes hold - it opens them up and helps them to grow as people.
QUESTION 08 | 08
Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?
Miranda — Knowing that every student is different and you have to help them to be comfortable with who they are if they are going to excel at being someone else.
