Laura - Kentish Town - School English

Methodology

Hello! I'm an online tutor with over ten years' experience. I first began tutoring after my degree in English Literature and continued whilst completing a Master's in Theatre Directing at the University of East Anglia.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

English (KS1 to KS3 - will consider GCSE and AS/2 pupils dependent on texts studied)
French (KS1 and KS2)
Drama (General)
English as a Foreign Language
Elocution
English for professional purposes

- Tell me about your qualifications.

PGCE (Goldsmiths)
MA in Theatre Directing (UEA)
BA in English Literature (University of Sussex)

- How much do you charge?

£25-35 per hour, dependent on subject and level.

- Where do you teach?

Online only until further notice.

- When are you available?

Very flexible!

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages!
I specialise in 11+ and Key Stage 3 English but I am able to teach across a range of abilities.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

7+
11+
iGCSE
GCSE
AS/A2

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Skype or FaceTime are both possibilities. I will suggest texts to be purchased (no more than £30 in the first instance). Lessons will comprise a mixture of reading, trouble-shooting and posing and answering questions.

After the initial few sessions, there is the possibility of sending homework to be marked (inclusive of lesson price).

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Some people say I'm like Mary Poppins! I always have far too many things in my handbag!

Well done for making the choice to take up one-to-one tutoring for your child. I am a firm believer that all children and young adults benefit from the opportunity to explore both academic and non-academic subjects with a specialist tutor at home.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I started out tutoring 11+ English exclusively but, over the years, I have had so many requests to teach primary mathematics, drama and elocution that I decided to branch out. I now do all of this and also occasionally proof-read dissertations and carry out Skype conversation classes.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

My Bachelor's degree was in English Literature which was a terrific foundation for teaching more generally, as I believe story-telling is at the heart of all learning. I then went on to do a Master's in Theatre Directing before training as a teacher.

- How much do you charge?

I am willing to consider reduced price consultation lessons. I will also make discounts for sessions of two hours or more. Please ask me about group lessons as this will depend on the size of the class and the level of differentiation required. I do not charge for travel.

- Where do you teach?

I'm afraid I can only offer lessons in students' homes for the time being.

- When are you available?

I am available all year round. Please check with me for exact availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach Key Stages 1 through to 5.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

7+
11+
GCSE English/Drama
AS English/Drama
A Level English/Drama

Background

- Over ten years of face-to-face tutoring.
- 2 years of classroom teaching.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Existing DBS through previous employer. About to apply for a new DBS under the new guidelines through a supply teaching agency. Will update when this comes through.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Goldsmiths.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Not currently.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have been on maternity leave since March last year! I have taught literally hundreds of pupils from all backgrounds. I thrive on sharing my knowledge and helping pupils reach their full potential.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught in a range of settings, including primary schools, preparatory schools, secondary academies and schools for those with profound learning needs. I have tutored for over a decade now, with many of my 11+ pupils gaining their first choice of school. Examples of recent successes include four pupils gaining entrance to Highgate School, one to Henrietta Barnett and one to Colet Court.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I am on the DBS update service.
