Having taught for a time in a London secondary school, I saw how the standard way of learning music can confuse people, especially if they miss out on the basics early on. Still, it's clear to me that anyone can enjoy music and get to the level they want, so while there is no right way to express yourself with music, there are good and bad ways to start that journey.
I have a fair amount of musical experience, from performing in orchestras and smaller bands on the trumpet, to formally studying the subject at the University of Bristol. My background is in classical and theory etc but I have never limited myself to one way of understanding or enjoying music.
