About Mark
Hello, my name is Mark. I’m a professional online English language teacher from the United Kingdom.
I have the international teaching certifications CELTA and TEFL.
I’ve been teaching English full-time since 2014. I have taught in classrooms, in-company, and I’ve even coordinated teachers in English immersion programs. Since 2017, I have been teaching English exclusively online to students from all over the world.
I believe that effective learning happens when students can connect the lesson with their daily lives.
In my free time, I love to read books, travel and expand my knowledge. I believe the more I know the more I can teach and help others to improve their lives.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Mark.
Perfect! Mark is a highly experienced Teacher, has a very nice accent and is super patient and friendly. I am lucky to have found him.
- Mark's response : Elza has a really high level of English. Her pronuciation is clear and her native accent isn't too strong.
Elza is confident in her abilities and so she should be, she has knowledge of a few different languages, Portuguese, Italian, French German, etc. and this has helped her to become proficient in the English language.
She really likes to be challenged and she is capable of discussing advanced topics. With Elza, there's no need to go slow, the faster and more natural, the better it is for her.

I had been sceptical about learning English online until I met Mark. He is not just a native speaker with a pure British accent. Mark's approach to teaching a foreign language is something I have been looking for a long time. He is a true expert who knows how to make lessons both effective and engaging. I highly recommend Mark as a teacher perfectly suited to everyone who really loves the language of Shakespeare and wants to learn it.
Mark's a super teacher. He has a great methodology, adapts the classes to the student using all his many years' experience. He knows well how to explain things and is organised and highly reliable. In my opinion, as a language school owner, the teacher is the most important of all the variables, and with Mark you won't have to worry about that - you can guarantee that he will give the best class to meet the student's goals.
Richard / former-employer/teacher in São PauloI've worked with Mark on countless english language immersions, classes and retreats over a two year period in Brazil. He's a very dedicated, hard-working, attentive teacher, and is well-qualified to be a teacher.
Mark is an excellent teacher.
I worked with Mark at Speak Up Idiomas in Brazil for three years and I remember he was one of the most requested teachers by the students, because of his professionalism and deep knowledge of the language and culture.Mark, foi um dos nossos melhores teachers! Profissional, didático e comprometido. Highly recommended!

Mark has been my English tutor in the past three years! He has developed an innovative and fun method of online teaching, that can be tailored to different needs. His tutoring has helped me to achieve a very high score on the IELTS. As a native English speaker, Mark has accurate tips on pronunciation and real-life use of English! I totally recommend Mark's service!
Mark was my English teacher a couple years ago. His special way of teaching was very important for me to finally understand that English isn't a hard language to learn, even for me. In fact, more important than that was he was always happy and patient. I wish every teacher were like him. Thank you, Mark!
I've worked with Mark and have had the pleasure of observing his talent for teaching. He has a special way of connecting with students and guiding them to a deeper understanding of the English language. He genuinely cares about his students and their progress.
I have known Mark for many years and to this day I still remember how driven and dedicated he was when we worked together at a school of English in Brazil. He had just started his teaching career and was always eager to learn how to be the best teacher a student could ask for. Some people are born with a gift and I believe Mark is one of them. He is the type of teacher students can trust for his kindness and friendliness. Also, he is very knowledgeable and, as far as I can remember, curious, which I consider a great asset in a teacher.
Mark is a very dedicated teacher and he is serious about his profession. He has obtained qualification that supports his role as a teacher.

01
Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I'm a native English speaker from the UK and therefore, I was lucky enough to be brought up using the language. However, by being an English teacher, it has given me the opportunity to learn more about my own language in order to help non-native speakers to understand English better.
02
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
I would have to opt for the actor Hugh Laurie. Nowadays, he is best known for his role in the series, 'House', but has done many things in the past. Hugh Laurie is the perfect person to represent the culture of the UK. He is well-spoken and understands how to use the traditional British sarcasm perfectly. If you meet a typical Brit, he is what you would expect to get.
03
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
A word I particularly like from the English language has to be: Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Yes, it is a really long word and more so, its meaning can show just how unfair the English language can be. This word is a medical condition for people who have a fear of long words. So, people who have this fear cannot tell others what it's called. That is just pure evil isn't it!
04
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Nowadays, speaking English matters to me because it has become the lingua franca of the world. It allows me and many others to communicate with people from all over the world. It is also more important to me because I have made teaching English my profession and therefore, I rely on it to make a living.
05
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
I believe that all languages have their difficulties and they vary depending on the student's native language. Most of the time the biggest problems come from how to use prepositions and articles. These have a tendency to confuse most learners even at a more advanced level. Another problem can be with the pronunciation of the language, which once again varies for different mother tongues.
06
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
When I first started learning Portuguese, I would often overhear natives talking and I would try to pick out words that I knew in order to understand the context of the conversation. Being new to the language, I would sometimes misunderstand. Here's one example of that.
One day, after being out and about in Sao Paulo, I realised that there was one word I heard often, but it really didn't make sense to me.
The word for lunch in Portuguese is 'almoço', and I would often hear people shouting it to each other. I started to think Brazilians have an obsession with lunch. One evening, I returned home and asked my wife, why do people keep calling each other lunch? I always hear people shouting 'almoço' at each other. My wife burst into laughter, I had misunderstood what they were saying, they were actually saying 'Oh moço' which basically means 'hey guy', just an informal way to get someone's attention.07
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
After living in Brazil for five years and trying to learn Portuguese, I now understand what it is like to be a language learner and some difficulties students have when trying to master a language. In turn I have adapted my teaching style to make learning English more enjoyable and less like a chore. This experience allowed me to meet many other teachers who I could exchange techniques and knowledge with and as a result, it has allowed me to fine tune my lessons to help students achieve their goals.

What makes you a Superprof in language?
Because everyone is different, and different people learn in different ways, I don't use one type of methodology. In fact, I don't believe that there is a single methodology that works for everyone. Instead, I use a variety of styles that work for your individual learning style.
