I first and foremost look at the curriculum the student is studying. Then discuss (with parents also) their goals and what they wish to achieve or gain from tuition. It is important to adapt to the students style of learning; and make sure they find the task at hand exciting. I try to make all my lessons fun; as a bored student will never put in 100% effort.
