My teaching method for languages is strongly based on the importance of a conversational approach and getting familiar with the new language. I try to include writing, reading and pronouncing every time I do an exercise for the student to learn the associations and improve simultaneously on all areas, and then go more in depth on the area where the student wants to focus.
My name is Sandra I have been living in England since 1991,16 years in London and 11 years here in the North East Darlington. My usual methods is to firstly assess the level of my student, and adapt the lessons to his actual and current needs and level.
In order for a language to be taught, I think that the best method is constant oral practice. What matters is to keep the attention of students on what’s fun about French while also giving them the chance to start using the language right away. Using movies, TV shows or easy reads is essential. I usually like to use visual elements as well, colors and flashcards.
I completed my degree (BA Hons French and Spanish Studies with Italian) at Lancaster University in 2010. I lived in both Brussels and Bilbao during that time as part of my year abroad, where I studied Law, History and Philosophy. I teach my students realistic language that they will use in France every day. I stress the importance of enjoying the learning process, while still learning the fundamentals of language. I mainly focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, speaking, and written exercises.
My teaching method is first of all to understand the student's difficulties and needs. Then I check with the student the elements he has already understood. When it's successfully done, I can begin to set up my working methods. In fact, I am very understanding and attentive. My goal is to help the student succeed in what he or she doing.
To ensure that my students do not tune out and lose interest in what I am teaching, I use frequent pauses to ensure you have understood what you have just been explaining. For instance, I ask you to summarise the idea I have just espoused and if I am teaching a group tutorial, I ask students to summarise what they have just learned to each other.
One of the main difficulty with the French language comes from the huge difference between the true pronunciation and the phonetic pronunciation one could deduce from the spelling of the word - ie, in French, a word is not pronunced and written in the same way. My usual method is based on immersion by discussion in the French language in a first time.
When it comes to oral expression, the tutoring sessions I hold are very friendly and casual. The student and I just sit on the sofa with a hot drink and talk in French about his week. I believe the student should try and think in French by the end of the hour so the lesson is exclusively in French. However, I am very flexible and the lessons will take the form the student wants.
