Why turn to a singing instructor for help?

What’s the difference between voice and singing lessons?

The difference between the two is merely semantics. People who start singing generally look for “singing lessons”, since they want to learn how to sing, while people who teach the art of song often call themselves “vocal coaches” and give “vocal lessons”, since they refer to the voice as the instrument. Just like when we talk about piano lessons, where you learn to master the instrument of the piano, you can also find ads for "vocal lessons” or other music lessons (gospel singing lessons, soloist lessons, classical jazz lessons, guitar lessons, etc.). These lessons focus on improving your vocal performance, where your coach will concentrate on your vocal health and technique. Certain pianists have actually become great vocal coaches. However, it’s true that the title of “vocal coach“ is also sometimes used by spoken voice teachers, who teach public speaking and acting, and who rarely give singing lessons. But this is rarer, and the title of “vocal coach” is the one most widely used by professional singing instructors.

How can singing lessons help?

You’re not alone in your hopes and fears. Don’t hesitate to speak with your potential vocal coach to discuss your doubts. And always try to find an instructor that will diagnose your main trouble areas when you attempt to produce sound, and who will help you advance in your preferred music style. This last point is important because, depending on where you live, you can find tutors who are specialised, as performers, in one style versus another. Lessons are in tune with the singing instructors, who are professional classical music or musical theatre singers, for example. A good instructor and musician will allow you to make vocal progress at your own rhythm. They will adapt to your musical ambitions and your level during your vocal lessons.
