A Level Biology student in Cambridge, Looking forward to helping you ace those science GCSEs!

I like to base my teaching around everyday things. For example, if I were teaching DNA replication, I'd describe it like copying a recipe (you write everything in shorthand, take it to the kitchen and use the corresponding ingredients: mRNA, Ribosome, Amino acids). I also like to make learning engaging and easy to remember and recall in an exam. Past papers are a favored revision technique of mine as they help me know exactly which areas need the most work.

Relevant Work Experience

As part of my time at Sixth Form, I have volunteered to be a Student Pastoral Mentor for lower school. This role involves assisting students in the Lower School (Years 7, 8 and 9) with any problems they might be facing, be it school-related or personal. It is my job to listen attentively and patiently to their problems and find possible solutions with neither preconception nor prejudice. In the instances where I am unable to provide an answer or there is someone more qualified who may be able to help, I refer the student to them. I readily volunteered for this role because I understand how stressful school life can be and I wanted to make a positive impact on my school community. My time as a Mentor has helped me with my patience and listening skills.

I also completed one week’s work experience at Cambourne Village College in the SEN Department. There, I was given the opportunity to work with children aged 11-14 who had learning difficulties in a variety of circumstances. I assisted in lessons, ran one-to-one sessions for those struggling in the classroom environment and held arts and craft workshops for the children.
During my time at Cambourne Village College, I could develop my organisational and leadership skills as well as enhance my ability to work in a team and follow instructions. The role required a lot of patience and creativity to enthusiastically engage the students and help them achieve to their full potential.

For the duration of the summer holidays a few years ago, I also volunteered for the ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ at the local library to encourage children to read more books and listen to their reviews about the stories they had read. This interaction was rewarding and fruitful as I could witness the joy of the children when they enthusiastically shared their reading experiences.
This opportunity helped me to enhance my confidence in communication and interpersonal skills. Furthermore, I could build on my ability to relate to the people from a wide variety of backgrounds in the community.
