I use a variety of teaching methods- one of the most common ones I use is to prepare presentations as a way of explaining the basics of a topic and then build on top of that based on how well the person understands it. I then give an example of a scenario where that knowledge would be applied so that they can see it in practice and then move onto giving them questions and tasks that would prompt them to actively and independently apply the knowledge that they learn. My sessions are based on the ideology that the student and myself are both learning something e.g. I suggest one way to solve a mathematical problem and the student supposes another method that is equally appropriate, this way both of our horizons are expanding in terms of knowledge and our ability to think beyond what it is given to us. Sometimes I also ask questions to check whether the student actually understands what I’ve gone through with them. These questions are mainly intended to get students engaged more than it is to make them doubt themselves or throw them off.
I am a A Level student from a Dutch-Somali background and have been involved in tutoring for about two years now- I do it simply because I enjoy it and I love that rewarding sense of fulfilment I get when I’ve helped someone else understand something and made their life just a tad bit easier.
