Liz - Central Reading - ESOL (English)

Methodology

Everyone can benefit from some voice work. You just have to get to know your voice, work with it and give it some care and attention and you may well be surprised at the results!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I am a speaking and singing voice specialist.
I give one-to-one sessions and group workshops for those wanting to be more confident and keep their voices healthy and more effective.
I also do business presentation skills coaching and accent reduction along with tutoring in English as a foreign language

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a law degree and a masters in choral education. I was also trained in EFL at The British Centre (part of the Folk University of Sweden) in Stockholm.

- How much do you charge?

My full adult one-to-one fee is £50/hr for teaching at my home studio. I have a student fee of £35/hr and a mature student fee of £40/hr.
For 2 or more in a session, group workshops, and company one-to-one and group training in-house, fees are available on request.
Travel expenses are charged at 45 pence per mile.
A minimum of 24 hours notice is required if lessons have to be cancelled or postponed. For less than 24 hours notice or a 'no-show', cancellation fees will be charged.

- Where do you teach?

I teach in my home studio in Reading. I occasionally travel to students' homes e.g. if they have a disability. I also travel to business premises, schools and colleges for longer workshops e.g. day or half day. My students come from Berkshire but also Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Hampshire.

- When are you available?

I am available from Monday – Friday from 10am – 7pm and some Saturdays. Other times are available on request.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages from complete beginners to professionals: my youngest student was 5 years old and my oldest 93. For singing, it is probably best if children start at 10+ years old.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for the ABRSM singing exams Grades 1 -8 and for GCSE and A-level music performance exams and drama school and music college auditions. I also prepare students and business professionals for university and job interviews.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I would urge anyone who wants to use their voice more effectively to have a go. Do not be put off by ideas of not being good enough or being too old. Spending time improving your voice will boost your confidence as well as keeping you fit, healthy and happy too! Give it a try!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught at the BRIT School, Richmond College in Twickenham and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I have run workshops for the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, West Midlands and Suffolk, PGCE students at Westminster College, Oxford Brookes University and Brunel University and post-graduates at the University of Reading.

I have run my own business Phoenix Again for voice tutoring privately and on a corporate level since 1991. I have delivered call centre training and corporate icebreakers and team building workshops as well as having referrals from laryngologists and speech and language therapists for continuing vocal strengthening and maintenance work with shared patients/clients. I also do therapeutic individual and group sessions for people with neuro-impairment (Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, dementia, stroke, Down's syndrome) and their carers.

I have taught English as a Foreign Language in Sweden and the UK and spent nearly ten years working for BBC Radio in the World Service as studio manager, writer, presenter and producer including work with English by Radio before concentrating on studying and teaching voice full time.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No, this is not applicable to what I do.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained privately for singing with Ana Raquel Satre, Marjorie Field and Janice Chapman.
I have an MA in Choral Education from Roehampton Institute of Education (formerly part of the University of Surrey now the University of Roehampton).
I have attended many CPD courses and seminars both in the UK, France, Sweden and the USA with leading voice specialists including: Dr Bonnie Raphael, Dr Meribeth Dayme, Jo Estill, Professor Graham Welch.
I trained in teaching English as a foreign language at The British Centre in Stockholm (part of Folkuniversitetet of Sweden).

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the Musicians' Union and have close links with the British Voice Association and also formerly with the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS) and the Voice Care Network (as an accredited tutor).

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently have a mixture of young and older students who want to sing to improve their voices and confidence or who are training to be more effective in business videos, presentations or sales pitches.
I have students who have vocal problems because of injury and cerebral palsy and singing groups for people with Parkinson's disease and dementia.
I also have a number of students who wish to improve their English and English accents to be understood more clearly, particularly in a business context.
