I am a teaching assistant and freelance editor and proofreader. I have taught a range of ages and currently work in a school for children with special educational needs, primarily autism and Down Syndrome.
I mainly teach children of primary school age, but have worked with older children too. I like to work intensively one-to-one or in small groups as this maximises the attention of both the student and the teacher, which I see as the key to learning.
My personal educational background is in literature and world history; I edit academic papers in my free time and am also an amateur language enthusiast.
My experience with children with special needs, and also with very young children, has informed my approach, which broadly follows the attention span of the child and is not afraid to take breaks or work outdoors etc. if that helps. When working with children who are older or more able, I like to stretch their potential and work hard, using praise and simple rewards. I have found this to be very effective and enjoyable for the student and also for me :)
