Luke - Stoke Newington - Music Theory

Methodology

I am a committed Piano tutor and composer with over 15 years experience teaching a wide range of pupils from children to adults. I always aim to tailor lessons to each individual's needs and abilities, and to make lessons both rewarding and fun.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I specialise in classical and jazz piano whilst also teaching rock and pop styles. I also teach music theory, arranging and composition alongside general musicianship and aural training.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a First Class Honours degree from Kings College London (2002). I subsequently obtained a Masters Degree from Trinity College of Music, London in 2004.

- How much do you charge?

£35 per hour and £17.50 per half hour. Other lesson lengths are also possible.

- Where do you teach?

I teach both from my home in Stoke Newington, London N16 and in the local area (Hackney, Clapton, Dalston, Newington Green, Stamford Hill). I cover the postcodes N16, E5 and E8.

- When are you available?

I am available weekday afternoons through to around 10pm.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages, though I recommend a minimum age of 5.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Where pupils or parents wish to pursue exams I can offer coaching for ABRSM Classical and Jazz, Trinity Guildhall and RockSchool exam boards. I also offer tutoring for ABRSM Theory of Music exams up to Grade 8.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Where appropriate I can tutor online via Skype.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Playing piano is an immensely rewarding and enjoyable pastime that repays the work put into it. It is never to late to learn and whilst there is no end to the process it is possible to derive pleasure playing from the very earliest stages!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 15 years experience teaching pupils from beginner through to post grade 8. I have worked both in-school and privately and from one-to-one up to whole class groups. I believe my experience enables me to offer specialised yet highly flexible tuition across a range of styles. I am passionate that students attain their goals and find playing to be a fun and rewarding experience.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, renewed in 2018.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music, London as part of my degree with Kings College London.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of ISM and PRS

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I teach a wide range of students, some of whom are pursuing classical piano whilst others are improvising in jazz or rock styles or playing rock and pop songs. I am always happy for pupils to try the music they wish to be able to play, and can always make suggestions along these lines.

Luke is a fantastic piano and music theory teacher. His enthusiasm and passion for music are infectious. He plans lessons with my individual aims in mind and explains (sometimes complicated) musical ideas with imagination and clarity. He is highly qualified, thoroughly skilled and I would recommend his services to beginners and professionals alike. Just make sure you book a lesson with him before another lucky pupil gets there!

Luke has proved to be an excellent piano teacher. He is instinctive, precise and creative and works towards keeping interest while challenging the pupil. He has been teaching my 13 year old daughter for a few years and she would highly recommend him.
