Mary - Truro - Maths

Methodology

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I provide tutoring services for Key Stage 2 (7-11 years) Maths and English, Maths and Spanish GCSE and Spanish for adult learners, as well as A-level Psychology.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a degree in Psychology, A-levels in Art Textiles, English Literature and Language, Dance, Psychology and Drama. I have an advanced certificate in Spanish. I am currently studying for a degree in Modern Languages through the Open University.

- How much do you charge?

My standard rate is £10/12 an hour for individuals; for all subjects I am happy to tutor individuals or groups, the latter of which will obviously incur a higher hourly rate but will work out cheaper per person. I will be considerate of special circumstances, please contact me through this site for more details.

- Where do you teach?

I am happy to teach in the student's home or to accommodate tutees in my own home. I am prepared to travel from Truro, where I live, to distances within a 25 minute drive.

- When are you available?

I am available outside of school hours, including holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach from age 4 upwards. When teaching Spanish, I will take learners with any level of experience.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Regarding on-line Spanish tutoring, this would be in place in support of face-to-face tuition. Online English tuition could happen in place of face-to-face if the student/parents should so wish.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I offer my services as a Tutor because I enjoy sharing knowledge and promoting the learning of others. I have experience of many different styles of teaching and learning and will discuss these with potential students prior to an initital tutorial. The intitial tutorial will allow for 'getting-to-know-you' time and assessment of the tutee's current ability to supplement what will have been established through previous correspondence.

Please contact me through this website and I will reply as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you!

A qualified teacher and experienced tutor, I give tutoring and homework designed solely in response to a student's personal learning style and required development, whether this is to grow in confidence, fill in gaps or revise for exams.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Maths up to A-level, Spanish up to A-level, Psychology up to A-level, French up to GCSE, Photography up to GCSE. I also offer support with essay writing and proof reading essays, coursework and dissertations.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I graduated with a degree in BSc Applied Psychology, then qualified with a PGCE in Mathematics. I have lived in France and Spain, where I studied their respective languages. I have attended several courses concerning the support of students with specific learning needs such as autism, Asperger's, dyslexia and communication difficulties.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30/£35 per hour, depending on the subject and its level. I may need to charge a little extra if you require me to travel over half an hour.

- Where do you teach?

I always teach in the student's home, unless a public space, such as a café or library, proves more suitable. I am based in East London, so can easily reach students in Hackney, Waltham Forest and Newham. I am happy to travel further, for a small extra charge.

- When are you available?

As a rule, I am flexible regarding availability across the week, but this will change depending upon other tutees' arrangements. Let me know your preferred times in your enquiry and I will respond with my current availability.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I am happy to teach from EYFS upwards.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I offer online tutoring either in support of face-to-face tutoring or as an outright alternative means. The tutee will need an internet connection strong enough to support Skype video conversations, except in the case of essay writing support or proof reading, in which case an email address is sufficient.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have privately tutored Key Stage 2 Maths and and taken groups for Key Stage 2 Art. I have also worked in Early Years settings and youth activity groups and currently work as a Teaching Assistant in a secondary school. In this position, I daily take small groups of students for Literacy and Maths tuition, and take pride in having taught these students how to read and subtract.

I lived in Barcelona working as a Psychology Assistant for one year, where I also took part in English/Spanish exchanges with native Spanish speakers and studied Spanish and Catalan intensively. I currently teach Spanish to students of various ability levels, adapting each lesson to the students' needs and goals, designing the learning materials appropriately.

I have experience of, and received training in, working with people with Autism, Dyslexia and other additional educational needs, so I am suitably prepared to work with students who may have any additional needs.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a CRB Enhanced Disclosure certificate, dated 17/11/2008.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I originally worked as a private tutor under the supervision of an agency, but now do so under my own initative. I take guidance from study guides and online resources, as well as my own studies and experience. I also use resources from the school where I am a Teaching Assistant.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My current students, who have all sought Spanish tuition, have come with differing levels of previous knowledge of the language and reasons for learning. I have found some students need to learn at a relaxed pace, allowing for detailed study, while others prefer to progress quickly through the grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, not one of my lessons is the same!

Previous students, aged 10 and 11, required a break halfway through the hour, when we would play number games. What they didn't realise, was that the games were actually consolidating their Maths learning...

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 10 years experience of private tutoring, 8 years working in schools, from age 2 up adults, and 5 years marking exams.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes (Enhanced).
