Mathematics is a cumulative subject. While not every part of mathematics affects every other part it is important to have a strong base to build upon. If a student is struggling with a specific topic it normally stems from one of two things. Firstly lacking a full comprehension of an earlier idea that is being built on. Secondly the new topic is being taught in a particular manner that does not 'mesh' with the student's way of thinking (either more time is needed for the topic to 'click' or an alternative method of approach is needed. My aim is to identify the cause, and then either shore up foundational skills, or identify alternate ways of looking at the problem as appropriate.
Technical consultant returning to the UK after working in IT and finance overseas. Mmath graduate with experience in both teaching my peers and assisting in a school setting (university module and prior work experience). Minimal formal teaching experience, but extensive practice in expressing mathematical concepts in simple English and alternate methods of approach.
Ideally a first session would require 90 minutes to be put aside. This allows for 60 minutes of actual Maths with the remainder of the time being used to address questions/concerns and to identify areas the student wishes to focus on. If an initial topic to focus on can be requested ahead of time this will also streamline things.
If the student has previous practice exam papers or if their teacher has provided an outline of their proficiency in various topics this would be useful for building a fuller picture. Likewise if's useful if the student themselves can take 10-15 minutes beforehand to identify what they see as their weakest point.
