Mathematics student offering Maths and Further Maths from year 7 to GCSE, online

Methodology

My tutoring style is practice based, as I feel the best way to achieve results with Mathematics is through practical experience with solving similar questions. By working through questions logically and with help at any stages you get stuck on, you can work on building your Maths knowledge to the level you would like to achieve. With younger students, this is achieved partially through a range of relevant Maths games.

I am currently available for tutoring on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings - if you're interested in tutoring outside of these times please let me know when you initially contact me. I also offer intensive tutoring, where I can provide multiple sessions per week for a shorter period of time (i.e. a week to a fortnight) - if you're interested please let me know the sort of time scale you're considering.

Tutoring Experience:

- University Undergraduates Year One, November 2020 – Present (4 hours).
As part of a peer mentoring scheme, I worked with six first year Maths undergraduates to create a study group where they could ask questions and engage with their course.

- A-Level, AQA Maths, November 2020 (11 hours).
I worked with this A-level student to improve his subject understanding before his mock exams. The topics covered were straight line graphs, circle theorems, exponentials/ logarithms, quadratics and surds.

- Year 10/11 student, April – May 2020, November 2020 – Present (10 hours), Maths.
I am supporting this student through her GCSE years with past papers.

- Year 11 student, October 2020 – Present (8 hours), Maths (Edexcel) and Science (AQA).
The aim of these sessions is to support this student in catching back up with her peers following the March lockdown. Maths is not a subject in which she feels particularly confident, so using the sessions to practice some more basic skills is helpful for completing harder questions.

- Year 9 student, September 2020 – Present (12 hours), Maths. The aim of these sessions is to challenge this student beyond the national curriculum and introduce him to new topics. So far we have looked at trigonometry, including the cosine rule and sine rule, and simultaneous equations.

- Year 11 student, October 2020 (10 hours), Maths (Edexcel), 16+.
The aim of these sessions was to introduce the student to all the relevant information that hadn’t been covered in school before her 16+ Edexcel Maths exam.

- Year 10 student, August 2020, (4 hours), Maths.
The aim of the sessions was to increase this students confidence with the basics over the summer holiday before their GCSE exams next year. We focussed on ratios and percentages, expanding brackets, squaring/cubing/square-rooting/cube-rooting numbers, sequences and statistics/data.

- GCSE student, June 2020 – July 2020, (7 hours), Maths.
We focussed on a range of topics, working to support the home-schooling tasks the student had been given, and reviewing tests and homework she felt she could have improved on. We initially focussed on fractions, ratios and indices. We then focussed on algebra, including simultaneous equations and factorising quadratics. We ended with density questions.

- Year 3 student, May 2020 – August 2020, (7 hours), Maths.
The sessions focussed on supporting the student while she was being home-schooled. We focussed on fractions, telling the time (including analogue, digital, 24 hour clocks and roman numerals) and measuring (volume, weight and length).

- Year 9 student, May 2020 – June 2020, (5 hours), Maths.
This student didn’t feel confident with Maths, so we mostly worked on securing a couple of basic ideas so that she’d have a solid basis going forward. We focussed on graphs, fractions, factors, indices and ratios.

- Year 8 student, April 2020 – July 2020, (9 hours) Physics.
In these sessions, we explore GCSE content that interests him. This has included ratios and percentages, electricity and circuits, energy, and waves and sound.

- Year 7 student, 2016 – 2017, (12 hours).
I tutored this student in Literacy (confidence and reading comprehension) while in a mentorship scheme at school. This role required me to offer positive and productive feedback while keeping the student motivated, and I took part in regular discussions with teachers to discuss her progress.

- I have completed multiple training days with Coachbright regarding effective online tutoring and safeguarding.

- I have an enhanced DBS check.

Perfect! We couldn't arrange a lesson due to technical issues and the time constraint, but Isabelle was still helpful and has suggested a methodology to tackle the questions I had. I think she is a great tutor!

Isabelle's response

I wasn't able to help them as much as I would've liked, as we experienced technical difficulties and they were under very intense time pressures. However, I hope the exam that they were preparing for, under short notice, went as well as they wanted it to.

Isabelle is a thoughtful and kind individual with a passion for maths. As a friend of Isabelle, I believe that she brings not only an outstanding knowledge of the subject but patience and understanding. Both of which I think are extremely important in the role. I would therefore recommend her highly.

Isabelle is an incredibly hardworking, dedicated individual who I have known for just over a year now. She is creative and confident and, although I have not worked with her in a professional capacity, knowledge of her high achievement at university so far assures me she completes her work to a consistently high standard.
As a tutor, I can assure you she will be kind and considerate, balancing the demands of the curriculum with your child's individual learning style, and ensuring your child's academic nees and ambitions are met and exceeded.

Aidan

She's kind, approachable, and can always find a way to explain it so in clicks in your head. Makes lessons enjoyable rather than a chore. All this whilst being incredibly gifted in Mathematics, Computing and general problem solving.

Caitlin

Isabelle is reliable, hard-working and committed. She is very passionate about her subject

M

Isabelle is attentive, organised and a pleasure to work with.

I
Isabella

I have known Isabelle for 15 years and throughout this time she has helped me in understanding maths. She is one of the kindest and most patient people I know, and this is reflected in her tutoring style. As well as being highly intelligent, Isabelle is good at making information accessible by tailoring her explanations if it wasn't clear the first time. I would recommend her for her patience and her sheer passion for maths, which are, in my opinion, the two most important attributes for any maths tutor. Enthusiasm provides a fun lesson, and patience provides a safe atmosphere, free from judgement and pressure.

Interview with Isabelle

QUESTION 01 | 05
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Isabelle — I'd always been interested in Maths but that interest really took off around GCSE level. Around that time I also started tutoring through a mentorship scheme set up at school, and I found that I really enjoyed it. I got more into tutoring around January 2020, and found I was able to help students and their families stay connected to their educations over lockdown. Since then, I have worked with 11 different pupils and provided over 50 hours of tutoring sessions!
QUESTION 02 | 05
Tell us more about the subjects you teach - what are your favourite areas to discuss with students?
Isabelle — A favourite area of mine to discuss with students is Cryptography, as Simon Singh's 'The Code Book' inspired a genuine love of the evolution of Cryptography. For example, did you know that cryptography is partially responsible for Queen Elizabeth's execution of Mary Queen of Scots? In fact, I found his book so interesting that I based my university personal statement on it! If you've never read it, it can be a little difficult to digest, but if you take it slowly and read a little bit at a time it's definitely worth it!
QUESTION 03 | 05
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Isabelle — I think that the most important quality when tutoring is patience. Being patient keeps the sessions relaxed for both the student and the tutor, and creates an environment in which the student feels comfortable learning and exploring gaps in their knowledge. This makes the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone involved, plus it's much easier for a student to learn if they know they don't need to worry if they make a mistake!
QUESTION 04 | 05
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching or something completely different?
Isabelle — I'd say that a key passion of mine is learning. Whether it's academic learning, watching science or nature documentaries, or teaching myself creative skills, I love giving my brain a challenge! I think my own love of learning is probably part of the reason why I find helping other people learn to be such a rewarding experience.
QUESTION 05 | 05
Any last advice?
Isabelle — I'm very aware that although Maths can be an extremely enjoyable subject, there are still lots and lots of students who dislike it or struggle with it. Importantly though, I also believe that with the right support anyone can improve their Mathematical confidence and skill. My advice to any student would be to keep going, and to keep looking for help until you find the right support for you.
