The first step for me is to gage the student's perception of the problem by observing their technique and then working to adjust it to a method hat suits them. By targeting specifically the areas the student feels they have trouble with, then completing exercises surrounding their broader current mathematics curriculum, I try to keep lessons varied to keep a student's interest and make sure we cover all areas that could be problematic.
