I am a passionate, enthusiastic and resilient newly qualified teacher of mathematics. I'm trained to teach children in the 11-18 age range (secondary school) . However, with my Qualified teacher and PGCE status, I can teach KS1-2.
I believe every child should be encouraged to explore how far they can go to achieve their very best in mathematics.
I aim to teach in new and creative ways and strive to make links between mathematics and how what we learn applies or can apply in real life, at every opportunity. Mathematics consists of diverse topics or branches. I try and make clear links and explore the relationships between topics through problem solving. This enables me and and my tutee to deepen our understanding of mathematical concepts.
My degree combined the teaching and learning of mathematics with pedagogy, focused on how children learn maths. Teaching should be done in such a way as to meet the diverse learning needs of learners whatever their ability or disability. Above all, I aim to give engaging and fun lessons but hard work, perseverance and a can do attitude is greatly encouraged on the part of my students.I like my learners to want to give it their best shot or to want to be challenged to make for a very fruitful teaching and learning partnership.
I plan my lessons to build on my learner's previous knowledge and structure it depending on how much support or challenge they require. Most importantly, I like to learn a bit about my learner as a person; that way I know how to engage them better and pave the way for an effective teaching learning partnership. Be ready to tackle a few (or lots of) problem solving tasks!
Finally, nobody is born with or without a maths brain. You'll be surprised how much you can achieve if you really want something. Remember, maths is not always about getting the right answer at first but how open you are and resilient in wanting to find it and practice, practice practice then challenge yourself as soon as you are confident enough to move on.
Good luck and I can't wait for us to get on this exciting mathematics journey. You'll be amazed!
I have taught mathematics in two secondary schools during my teacher training course.
Before that and during my degree course, I volunteered as a class teaching assistant and then worked briefly as a mathematics classroom assistant in a secondary school. I worked with pupils on a one to one basis and in small groups; inside and out of the classroom.
During this time I also supported year 11 students preparing for their gcse mathematics exam.
I have experience of working with pupils with special educational needs and who have English as an additional language.
I've worked with classes of mixed ability where I've had to differentiate appropriately so that every child is suitably supported and/or challenged and makes the required progress as prescribed by dfE and the school assessment policies.
No additional rates. I just require you to be able to have your own equipment including a mathematical set. A laptop with Microsoft office package(optional) will be useful but not compulsory to help explore knowledge and deepen understanding of some concepts e.g. In statistics or algebra. Access to the internet will also be useful for a more engaging and effective learning.
I shall provide printouts of resources where appropriate.
Perfect! Excellent, got on really well with my son and had well planned lessons. Helped a lot. Thank you
Great attitude to learning. He wants to do even better in maths and he will as he grows in confidence.
