I am a physics and mathematics graduate with experience tutoring primary and secondary students. I have found from my own personal experience and from discussions with students that difficulty often arises from missing or poorly understood foundation material, so I apply the Socratic method to determine a student's level of understanding and ensure comprehension and the ability to apply knowledge rather than wrote learning of subject material. I prefer to discuss and explain ideas with students, then set exercises for them to practice in their own time (yes, homework) but will happily work through problems that are challenging or confounding to help students understand and realise a sense of achiement through finding solutions. I also strive to prepare students for success by teaching best practice methods and high standards of workmanship.
I have tutored year six students struggling with the curriculum and helped them to achieve greater understanding by identifying and improving areas of poor comprehension, specifically teaching times tables to improve ability with division and fractions. I have assisted year eleven students with concepts they struggled with by discussing and providing different examples and ways of approaching problems. I have also tutored year eleven students with extra curricular work; teaching advanced concepts and assisting with extra credit experiments, report writing and data analysis. My bachelor's degree in physics and maths exposed me to a broad range of topics, and when undertaking postgraduate studies in electrical engineering I often encounterd the same topics from a different perspective, highlighting on a personal level how different approaches to learning and problem solving are effective for different people. I have had success helping students find the approach to understanding concepts that suits them best, and find the process extremely rewarding.
Travel rates apply to the first hour only of a session, not consecutive hours. Parents of primary and early secondary children are welcome to attend sessions conducted in my home for their peace of mind.
