Maths graduate with 5 years tutoring experience offering individual/group sessions in Aylesbury

Methodology

I tutor all levels of secondary school including GCSE Level Further Maths. My sessions are generally relaxed and the approach is tailored to each individual student, depending on the nature of how they learn, their existing mathematical abilities, and their interest in the subject as a whole. As well as covering the necessary procedures required for developing high levels of mathematical competency, there is also an emphasis on the history and application of each topic covered, in order to build context and enthusiasm in the subject.

Rosa has been the most wonderful tutor for both of my kids and I cannot rate her highly enough. She tutored my secondary aged children via on-line lessons with amazing results and I was always happy at how they looked forward to her lessons. Both now sit with a grade 9 for maths in their school reports. What a wonderful achievement for them - and great credit to her.

Rosa has a very engaging style that made the lessons both fun and productive. To me, that was the key, and I don't hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking to improve their skills in maths.

Interview with Rosa

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Rosa — I started to become interested in Mathematics during my A-Level years - before then it was a subject that I could complete to a high standard but without really understanding the purpose of maths as a tool, and how I could use it in life outside of the classroom. Once I gained a glimpse of this, my passion for learning maths grew exponentially, and alongside it my drive to share the subject with other people, especially those that dislike or fear it.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Rosa — I teach all levels of Mathematics for secondary school students. My main interests lie in pure maths - the more abstract a topic is, the easier it is for me to both understand and teach. Number, ratio, algebra and geometry are high on my list. Mechanics is off my list and best left to another tutor!
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Rosa — I was lucky enough to have an excellent maths teacher at college for my A-Levels, who was truly inspiring and managed to present the subject to me in a way I had never seen it before. He would always be interested in where a theory came from: who devised it, for what purpose, and with what previous tools/knowledge? I did not always understand the proofs that he would excitedly scrawl across the board, but his love for the subject was infectious and gave me a thirst to know more.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Rosa — Patience, creativity (yes, even when learning maths!), a genuine passion for the subject, the acceptance that not all people share one's own educational abilities and interests, an in-depth understanding of the subject (methods, procedures, history, applications etc.), an ability to apply those skills to the real world, an interest in sharing skills and knowledge with other people.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Rosa — At secondary school I had a maths teacher who was pretty good, in that she managed to develop great maths skills in a disinterested and rebellious student such as myself. However, her answer to so many questions was simply 'because I said so'. I have since learned, from my great teachers at college and university, that everything in maths has an answer, even those tricky questions that require you to delve into the philosophy of maths (what is infinity? what is zero? how is it possible that 0^0 is not equal to zero??). These are the parts of maths that I strive to answer with all my students, and that continue to truly fascinate me.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Rosa — The largest challenge with maths remains the opinion of most students that it is extremely difficult, somewhat boring, and seldom useful outside the classroom, especially when we live in a world of calculators. Many students may have this misconception reinforced by teachers that often have good mathematical knowledge but lack the passion and creativity required to present the subject in a way that makes it both relevant and exciting. Many students see maths as having 'right' or 'wrong' answers with no grey area in between. This makes the subject appear more bland (and even more difficult) than it actually is.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Rosa — As can be guessed by now, my main passion is mathematics - it is a subject that brings great rewards from many different angles (completing a proof after 2 days of lost time on false tangents, knowing that you can theoretically get 100% in an exam and even know your score before it has been marked, gaining a numerical/arithmetic tool that helps to protect you from scammers and fraudsters, equipping yourself with a logical framework of analysis with which to approach the complications of life.. and so much more). Aside from this, my passions are teaching, tutoring, working with children, and travelling as much as possible.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
Rosa — That's a question best left for my students to answer!
