Methodology

My name is Margaret Howarth and My Maths Online Tutor service is based in Lancashire. I offer maths and English online tuition and I concentrate on enabling students gain in confidence to reach their full potential in the skills needed for personal growth.

Background

I have fourteen years experience.
I have taught in classrooms, in the workplace and one-to-one.
Through my teaching career to date I have had the privilege of watching my students learn new skills, gain confidence and finally get a fulfilling career. Many have remained friends.

I completed this course part-time in the evenings. Functional Skills tutor
2012 – Present HMP Manchester
I am responsible for delivering Functional Skills maths and English to a diverse group of offenders. I track their progression and ensure targets are maintained.
Lecturer in Law and Sociology
2009 – 2012 Hopwood Hall College
In this employment, I developed Access Level 3 Sociology and Level 3 Law in accordance with OCNNWR standards. I developed schemes of work to include enrichment activities for example the law students always visited the courts and the local magistrates came in to give talks.
I have been personal tutor for Access level 2 and Access Level 3 students which has involved personal statement writing, overseeing UCAS applications and preparation for university. I have delivered and developed resources for GCSE Sociology and GCSE Law in accordance with AQA and delivered AS Sociology in accordance with OCR. I have also delivered and developed resources and e-learning for AS and A2 Law and developed areas of the college VLE for all of the above subjects. My 2011 GCSE grades for Sociology were 35% A 40% B and 25% C.
Skills for Life tutor specialising in both literacy and numeracy
2003 – 2009 HMP Buckley Hall, The Manchester College
Whilst working in offender learning I taught literacy and numeracy basic skills to adult females offenders and adult male offenders from pre-entry to level 3 in a variety of settings including: classrooms, workshops and one-to-one. I was responsible for assessing students’ skills to ensure the correct level of education.
In 2006 I led a team of tutors delivering Skills for Life provision which involved liaising with awarding bodies in order to register students for awards and claim certificates. I created data capture administration tools to track student progression to ensure quality. I also delivered Family Learning programmes embedding literacy, numeracy and ICT. I visited a number of other prisons to find the best models of Skills for Life provision and to share good practice both regionally and nationally. In negotiation with the regional Skills for Life Quality Manager I organised training to the workshop trainers and prison officers ensuring a whole organisation approach. I undertook graded lesson observations for the college and was involved in the standardisation process cross-college. I was part of the quality team ensuring all curriculum files were complete and up to date in accordance with the quality calendar.
