Maths & Physics- Excellent exam preparation - fast, fun & effective teaching from highly experienced tutor

Methodology

Students and parents consistently report that my approach to tutoring is fast, fun and effective. Lessons are tuned to the needs of the individual student and I am always careful to start each topic at a level where the student is comfortable, progressing gradually so that the student feels at ease and learns quickly. Questions, no matter how simple or advanced, are always welcome. Whenever possible, I relate the lesson to a real-world situation or application and help students see the connections between different subjects and topics.

Background

I have over 20 years experience teaching in private schools, state schools and universities. Fully converse with OCR, AQA and Edexcel/Pearson syllabuses for A-level, GCSE, KS3 for Physics and Maths. Invited to be an A-level Physics board examiner by OCR. Experienced in marking A-level / GCSE coursework, exam assessment and exam technique. Regularly provide "Maths for Physics" booster lessons at schools. Extensive experience in helping students attain the highest grades as quickly as possible in all age groups including KS3, GCSE, A-level, IB, BTEC, Degree, PhD and SEN (special educational needs). Recently, I have contributed to textbooks and made instructional videos for Maths KS3 and GCSE students.

Michael's CV

Michael John Jory PhD
Nationality: British

Profile:
Experienced Mathematics, Physics and Art Teacher, Research Physicist and Designer seeks role as tutor. Over 20 years teaching experience in Physics, Maths and Further Maths A-level. Strong academic, research and problem-solving background. Author / co-author of 20 publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals. Excellent communication and design skills allow mathematical and scientific concepts to be pitched at a level appropriate to the student (including SEN students).

EMPLOYMENT
Exeter College (Part Time) May 2017- Present
Associate Lecturer in Engineering Mathematics. Responsible for planning and delivering Mathematics lessons for students taking BTEC level 3, HNC & Degree Engineering courses.

Teaching Personnel (Part Time) January 2017- June 2017
As a Further Maths tutor working one-to-one with a student who has selective mutism, I was responsible for the design and delivery of all lessons and homework. The student was able to cover the entire 2-year syllabus in under 5 months and attained a grade A in the exam.

Self-employed Maths and Physics Tutor July 2016- Present
Providing one-to-one Physics, Maths & Further Maths lessons for Degree, A-level, IB & GCSE students.

Sparx: Illuminating Learning Ltd July 2013- July 2016
My role as Content Scientist required me to plan, write, proof-read and teach Mathematics lessons for year 7 to year 11 classes and tutor groups while ensuring the technical aspects of the Sparx product were delivered smoothly and on time at state schools in Exeter. Working closely with Maths department staff, heads of departments across the school and the headmaster, I timetabled and delivered extra Maths lessons for SEN students and a lunch-time homework club for GCSE students. My duties also included managing (and teaching with) a team of tutors within the school to provide one-to-one or small-group lessons for those students who were struggling with Maths. Other parts of my role included: designing and producing instructional help videos for all; writing engaging ‘extend and challenge’ questions for the most able students; writing student reports; being pro-active in emphasising the real-world implications and cross-curricular connections in each Maths lesson.
Exeter Tutorial College September 2007- June 2013
Head of Physics and Art (A-level and GCSE for both subjects)
Exeter Tutorial College is considered by Ofsted to “provide an outstanding quality of education to its students” featuring “outstanding teaching and use of assessment” with “teachers’ knowledge of their subject specialism and the examination board requirements being excellent”. I took full responsibility for the delivery of all Physics courses at the College. My duties included preparing lesson plans for classes; teaching A-level Physics classes including both A & B syllabuses for Edexcel, OCR & AQA exam boards; designing, purchasing equipment for, setting up and teaching all Physics practicals; marking and moderating all Physics coursework as required; teaching classes for GCSE Physics; providing additional one-to-one Physics lessons for weaker students and teaching "Mathematics for Physics" booster lessons; purchasing materials for & teaching A-level & GCSE Art classes and marking all coursework as required. I was also invited to become a board examiner for A-level Physics by OCR.

University of Exeter (Part Time) October 2007-July 2013
Lecturer in ‘Mathematics for Medical Imaging in Physics’
I was solely responsible for the design and teaching of lessons that enable students without a strong mathematical background to cope with the demands of their Physics courses. Many students had not studied Maths since taking their GCSE 20 years ago while others had recently achieved high grades in A-level Maths. Consequently the course was designed to provide lessons tuned to the individual within a group environment.
Private Tutor October 2006- July 2013
Teaching Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics (A-Level, GCSE, Key Stage 3 etc) on a one-to-one basis has enabled me to develop a range of teaching techniques that allow the relevant information to be conveyed to the student in a fun and effective way that enhances their chances of obtaining the higher grades come exam time.
University of Exeter (School of Physics & Astronomy) October 1994-October 2006
Teaching and Research Fellow / Research Project Manager
Responsibilities included: teaching problems classes, tutorials and laboratory classes; supervising undergraduate, masters and PhD student projects; marking of student project reports; writing and proof-reading scientific papers, research grant proposals & reports for industry; teaching school children who were visiting the University for work experience; giving tours of the Physics Department to groups of visiting school children, industrialists and academics; giving oral presentations at international conferences; designing and making apparatus for experiments; writing computer programs to analyse data and model theory. My approach to teaching is continually informed by the excellent problem-solving skills I developed through working on a wide range of projects that involved: optical sensing, surface-plasmons, acousto-optics, fluorescence, optical characterization of thin films and diffractive structures, electrochemistry, colloids, diffraction grating manufacture, laser interferometers, spin coating, thin film evaporation, light scattering from microscopic particles, writing computer programs to theoretically model the optical response of systems, Mie scattering, liquid crystals, Langmuir-Blodgett films, microwaves, designing and making apparatus, precision machining & heat treatment of metals.

EDUCATION:
University of Exeter
PhD in Physics 1991-1994
BSc Combined Honours Maths and Physics II(i) 1988-1991
Bridgwater College, Somerset 1986-1988
A-Levels: Maths (A) Physics (A) Further Maths (A) Art (A)
Chilton Trinity Comprehensive, Bridgwater, Somerset 1981-1986
GCEs: 10 O-levels (8 grade A, 2 grade B, Maths, Physics, English – A, A, A)

SKILLS:
My research work regularly required me to break down a complex problem into tiny parts and then solve each part in turn in order to achieve the long-term goal. Throughout this process it was absolutely vital to be open to new ideas, re-assess and adapt one’s approach, acquire new skills and collaborate with colleagues to share expertise. These skills have proved to be invaluable when teaching.
Working with children who struggle with Maths and Physics; helping mature students return to education; giving tours of research laboratories to school children, academics and industrialists; giving presentations to audiences of hundreds at international science conferences and appearing on live national TV have allowed me to develop excellent communication and presentation skills.
Collaborating with students, academics, industrialists, engineers, designers, athletes, journalists and charities has enabled me to develop an ability to pitch Maths and Physics concepts at a level appropriate to the student and describe a problem from different perspectives to aid understanding.
Much of my teaching experience involves teaching the full two year A-level syllabus to ‘fresh-take’ students in just one year with consistently excellent results and this requires precise time management.
I am pro-active and enthusiastic in describing how the techniques used in Mathematics Physics and Art can be applied outside the classroom and this approach is informed by projects I have undertaken beyond teaching and research which include:

Product design and manufacture of bicycle hubs - I have experience of designing, prototyping, precision machining, heat treating, preparing engineering drawings and working with engineers based in the UK and Taiwan.
Website design – I’ve created websites for local businesses including the University of Exeter
Working with local councils, businesses and Devon Wildlife Trust I’ve given talks and demonstrations at local schools teaching children bicycle skills and artistic painting techniques.
Photographs, diagrams and adverts that I’ve designed have appeared in internationally distributed scientific journals, sport magazines and product brochures.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I have authored / co-authored 20 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
I paint and exhibit regularly (my work has been shown in galleries in London and across the Southwest, has appeared in the local and national media and is in private collections around the world). (concealed information)
Driving License: full clean for 30 years.
