Central Six Sky Café and Footbridge
The assignment was given to a group of 5 to design a footbridge for the Central Six Retail Park in Coventry. The briefing was received Monday by a deadline on Thursday and required competitive tendering against others.
Personal roles included project management and deliberation of tasks. It was key to assign tasks as per strongest skill sets of individuals in order to most successfully fulfil the brief. Other tasks included exploring needed criteria, identifying present stakeholders, structural load bearing calculations, comparison of schemes to recommend most suited for the task.
On the day, the group received the best feedback resulting in a presentation to the class & tutors and more notably Civil Engineers representing Arup, Atkins, Waterman Group and Hyder Consulting. During the presentations I took a leading role with confidence, opening the presentation as well as answering specifics from the outside representatives. As a result of the project, the group obtained a commendation.
I gained significant experience and feedback that aided in improving my management & organisational skills.
Final Year Group Project
In the final year, a project was carried out with a group consisting of members from all disciplines including architects, building and quantity surveyors, and civil and structural engineers. The task was to extend the existing Sir John Laing building and extensive tests had to be carried out in order to produce feasible design options.
After the project had been completed, a simulation day was carried out which consisted of a small presentation and various questions regarding the specifics of the option.
During this project, the role taken was a structural engineer so carried out all structural calculations as well as assisting with other tasks including site layouts, surveys and a construction methodology.
This tasks enhanced communication and organisational skills due to the requirement to work within a large team.
