I give lessons to A-Level and GCSE pupils.
Having just finished my A-Levels only a couple of years ago, I have fresh experience of how to gain the top grades and I can effectively share this knowledge with my pupils.
I carefully design a lesson plan according to the pupil's objective/ability, whether it is the learning of a new subject, catching up with concepts or revision.
My techniques are:
1. Make sure that the pupil understands the concept correctly before attempting to solve problems on related material. If the pupil has difficulty understanding a topic, I will show them different ways they can approach the topic, usually through worked examples.
2. No matter the ability/level of the pupil, I will make sure I give them exercises which are challenging to the pupil, as I believe that setting exercises which the pupil can already easily solve does not aid learning in maths.
3. When a pupil is stuck, I will make sure to give just enough hints to make the pupil battle with the exercise, and not just explain the full answer straight away. In my experience, this has always been an effective way of teaching.
4. Set interesting homework to the pupil, so that they can come to the next lessons prepared.
