To me, an outstanding practitioner is one who can strike up strong relationships with students, tailor lessons to the needs and interests of the class and assess and update their practice to provide the most effective teaching to ensure all students progress. After every lesson I teach, I thoroughly assess the students’ progress and adapt my future lessons accordingly. Marking work and homework regularly alongside directed questions during lessons allows me to determine students’ understanding.
Hi, I'm Laura!
I am a Northern Irish full time teacher and part time maths tutor. Although my undergraduate degree is geophysics, after a year in industry working offshore, being a 'people person' I decided I wanted a career that involved working directly with people. I have always enjoyed being around children having many nieces and nephews so I decided that teaching would be the career for me.
Maths has always been a passion of mine hence being the subject I decided to specialise in. When I was in school I always enjoyed maths but I often had to work hard in lessons to fully unstandardised the subject content. This has positively affected my teaching ability as I am able to relate to the students when teaching difficult topics and concepts. I can predict the common misconceptions and think of different ways to explain the subject content accordingly to help the learners achieve success.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy travelling, music, cooking and photography.
Having qualified in 2016, I have taught in both primary and secondary schools. I have taught KS2, KS3 and KS4 mainly focussing on KS2/3. This has given me a niche skill set aside from general maths teaching. I have a clear understanding of the different key stages and their curriculum, so I am well placed to help students who are finding the transitions between primary and secondary education challenging.
I have taught students with a range of special educational needs from dyslexia to autism so I am able to adapt my teaching to meet the students' requirements.
PERSONAL PROFILE
I am a hard working and self-motivated individual who strives to teach to the best of my abilities at all times. I am reliable and responsible with good communication skills and have worked effectively both individually and as part of a team in both schools where I have worked. I am competent at teaching maths with the subject based in my degree choice but also having undertaken a subject knowledge enhancement course prior to the PCGE course.
