I have extensive experience of teaching maths. I use that experience with a patient and supportive approach to enable students to learn. This year I am preparing students for GCSE maths and for 11+ maths as the entry test for local grammar school.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach GCSE maths at foundation tier and key stage 3 maths. I prepare students for their key stage 2 SATs exams and 11+ entry tests for grammar schools
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA degree in Maths, English and History and a teaching qualification from University College Cork, Ireland. In addition, I have a certificate in Adult Dyslexia Support; an MA in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and a level 4 qualification, Subject Specialist in Literacy.
- How much do you charge?
I offer the first session free and without obligation, as this provides an opportunity to see whether the student and I can work together. Then I charge £30 to £35 per hour for each subsequent session. If it is possible for me to match two students with similar levels and needs, then I can offer paired lessons at £20 per hour per student. There is no charge for travel to within 5 miles of my home in Redhill.
- Where do you teach?
I cover Redhill and Reigate and up to 5 miles from those centres.
- When are you available?
I am available weekdays, during the day and after school times until early evening. I am available for the full academic year; booster sessions during half terms and holidays can be discussed. I am currently recruiting students for 2017-18 and would welcome all enquiries.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
Secondary school students up to GCSE age. Year 6 students preparing for their Sats tests. Adults for GCSE maths or Numeracy qualifications
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
SATs and GCSE Foundation tier
- Do you have a personal message for students?
What my sessions aim to do is help you figure out what steps you need to take to find the solution to a math's problem. So its not about doing lots of the same exercises. It will be about talking, thinking things through, really starting to understand mathematical processes and gaining in confidence as you increase your skills.
It takes time for a student to learn a maths idea, practise it so that they are confident of preforming well in exams. The sooner the tuition can start, the more time a student has to improve.
- What kind of experience do you have?
Feedback Report For Ciaran (Mr)
From: 15(concealed information)4
To: Ciaran (Mr) I
Report: "Ciaran is a calm, patient tutor who was able to empathise with my son who struggles with maths. He prepared for each lesson and always had practical methods to try to help my son understand the different aspects of maths. He is reliable and flexible and I would highly recommend him as a tutor."
I have worked in education throughout my career. I started teaching Maths in a secondary school in Kentish Town London. I have worked in Adult Education and Further Education colleges. I have managed Additional Learning Support so have detailed knowledge, experience and understanding of learning difficulties and disabilities. I was Head of Department for Maths and English in our local college, East Surrey College, where I taught foundation tier GCSE maths and functional skills maths at all levels to teenagers, adults and students for whom English was a second language.
In 2016, I worked in a secondary school in Gravesend Kent, tutoring year 11 students identified as needing further support in maths. They were studying for foundation GCSE maths. I have home tutored a 16 year old as he was not able to come to his school- we worked on GCSE maths content.
In my experience, for some students studying at GCSE level there are elements of Key Stage 2 or 3 Maths that are still presenting difficulties. As part of my teaching, I work with them to revise these until they are fully confident. I work as a marker for Edexcel correcting summer GCSE maths, Foundation papers. This has given me invaluable insight into how students can gain vital marks when they take their exams. In December '16, I started teaching for Surrey County Council youth service section. I am teaching maths and English to year 10 and 11 students.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
My DBS was updated in October 2016
- Where and with whom did you train?
My initial degree and teaching qualification were taken in Ireland. As a teacher, I undertook continuous professional development throughout my career. I am registered with the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics. This helps me to keep my knowledge of developments in Maths teaching up to date and supports me in continually improving my skills as a teacher, something in which I strongly believe. Currently, I am focused on an approach to teaching called "Teaching for Mastery" - this is about ideas learnt from teacher exchanges between UK and China.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
This year just gone, I prepared students for GCSE maths; these have all taken their exams and we await their results. I have also prepared a year 6 student for their SATS exam and continue to teach and prepare him for his first year in secondary school. Another of my parents gave the follow feedback
" Ciaran is a reliable and dependable individual. My boys developed a positive attitude towards Maths once they started working with Ciaran. I appreciated the feedback about the boys' progress that Ciaran always gave me as a parent. Ciaran is very organised, he plans ahead and notifies the customer of his plans in good time. Ciaran would mark my children's work during his own time showing his selflessness. He went out of his way and communicated with my children's school and college teachers showing his positive attitude towards his work. Above all he cares for his students and he is very approachable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ciaran to any student who is looking at getting a better understanding of GCSE Maths." Molly, Redhill July 2017
