I am an Oxford graduate and former research scientist with five years of tutoring experience.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach mathematics and physics up to KS5.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold an undergraduate masters degree in physics from the University of Oxford and a PhD in theoretical particle physics from the University of Southampton.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour for KS5, £25 per hour for KS4, and £20 per hour for KS3/2, plus £5 per tutorial to go towards travel expenses.
- Where do you teach?
I travel to students' homes across London, approximately Zones 1–4.
- When are you available?
I am generally available in the afternoon and evening from Tuesday to Saturday.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I mostly teach students from KS3 to A-level, but I also teach mathematics to KS2 children and physics and mathematics to adult and casual learners.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for A-level and GCSE mathematics and physics examinations as well as IGCSE, IB, and BMAT.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am flexible in my approach and adapt to the needs and desires of each individual client or student in terms of how I tutor and how I structure sessions. I am patient and friendly as well as encouraging and enthusiastic. I have an excellent knowledge of my subjects and a clear understanding that allows me to communicate ideas effectively. I am skilled at tracing back to the sources confusion, which is important for subjects like mathematics and physics where new topics usually build upon and require a good understanding of previous ones. I try to make to make the subjects I teach interesting with insights into how everything relates together and what the implications and applications are as well as explaining different ways to think about problems. I aim to leave students with a clear understanding of the material, a justified belief in their own abilities, and an enjoyment and appreciation of the subject.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have five years' experience working as a private tutor, mostly teaching mathematics and physics from KS3 up to A-level, and three years' experience working as a part-time demonstrator, teaching physics to undergraduates. I have also demonstrated at public outreach events.
As well as this teaching experience I also have seven years' experience working in particle physics research—as a graduate student at the University of Southampton and then as a postdoctoral fellow at Indiana University.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an enhanced DBS certificate and am registered with the DBS update service.
My son was predicted a 'D' grade at school, he was not enjoying the subject and had unfortunately missed a substantial part of the course due to illness. Jonathan was simply outstanding. He was always punctual, enthusiastic and extremely professional. His friendly approach meant he was able to gain a good understanding of his student and accurately identify areas requiring additional support. He has the ability to make Physics lessons interesting. Ben achieved an 'A' grade in his GCSE exam.
You are a very patient and dedicated tutor that I would highly recommend to anyone else looking for a maths tutor, or the other subjects you tutor in. You are highly educated and knowledgeable in the subjects you offer tuition on which proves assurance in what a person is paying for. You use different techniques effectively in helping a student understand the subject matter.
The way you teach is patient and kind and I feel so much more confident in the understanding of the subject. Thank you for everything you've done for me. For always being on time and for giving me so much of yours.
