I understand that to some people, Maths might as well be in a different language! Everyone learns differently, but I find that relating Maths to everyday life makes it much more accessible to my students, and if it's logical and relatable it's much more likely to be remembered too.
I prefer using past papers to teach, as I feel it's the most helpful way of preparing for an exam. It puts the student in front of something they might find initially intimidating - with the aim of making it much less scary over time! It's only words and numbers on paper at the end of the day. Through the past paper questions we can identify strengths and weaknesses and work together to solve each question, explaining the process along the way.
If something feels particularly difficult, we'll work through more examples of the same type of question until it clicks. For this reason, 1 exam paper might take three or four sessions to complete, but that's okay! Over time, confidence and knowledge will build, and that exam paper will become less and less intimidating. It also allows us to look at exam techniques, such as how long to spend on each question, and how to read questions properly.
I'm a degree graduate, BSc Biological Anthropology, and now an experienced Maths tutor, typically working with GCSE students who find Maths difficult, rather than those who excel and want to reach A* grades. I can teach to an A* standard, of course, but I understand my strength lies with making Maths make sense to those who dread it.
I aim to listen, access how you learn, and work together in a laid back environment, primarily working through past papers so the final exam doesn't feel as intimidating. I have experience in tutoring GCSE students in school, as well as adults looking to reach that grade C or above.
