Matthew - The Online Biology Tutor. 30 years of experience teaching exclusively biology on all the UK examination boards.

Methodology

I stick exclusively to the task in hand of getting you through this particular academic hurdle so that you can get on with the next phase of your life.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Biology only.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

B.A./M.A. (Oxon.) in Zoology from Oxford University (Exeter College). MSc and DIC (with 'distinction') in Applied Entomology from Imperial College, London University. Diploma in Tropical Agriculture from Reading University

- How much do you charge?

£65 per hour online (£10 per hour discount for tutorials scheduled before 3 pm on weekdays UK time). Please note that I no longer offer a free initial tutorial, although any set-up time for the online system is not charged for.

- Where do you teach?

I teach worldwide online. Calling it 'tuition by webcam' is just plain silly I don't even use the webcam. For voice I use Skype, Zoom or whatever VOIP protocol suits you, and for notes I use an interactive online whiteboard called 'Scribblar' which enables me to put-up or write notes that we can both write-on in real time. What one sees the other sees instantly. I have pre-prepared notes for all the UK A-level examination boards, plus IB that I can e-mail in advance for you to print-off and write on so that you don't need to write down what you see on Scribblar and you can just write-in any small additional notes you wish to add. I can also put up past papers and mark schemes for us to discuss.

- When are you available?

I can work more or less any time between 11 am and 10 pm GMT/BST seven days a week whenever I have a free slot.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

16 to adult. Mostly A-level but occasionally G.C.S.E./I.G.C.S.E and I.B. My youngest student has been 15 and my oldest 42!

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Mostly A-level (all the major U.K. boards, ie AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, EDUQAS, CIE, IAL) but occasionally G.C.S.E./I.G.C.S.E and I.B.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I teach online via 'Scribblar' - an interactive online whiteboard, using 'Skype' audio for better sound quality. I have uploaded all of my A-level notes to Scribblar. There is no need for any downloads other than Skype if you do not have it. You just follow an e-mailed link to my Scribblar 'room' and you are in! What I write on the interactive whiteboard you see in real-time and vice-versa. I e-mail notes in advance of the tutorial for students to print-off so that they can follow what I am saying without having to bother to write everything down and only need to make any small additional notes. It is very simple and easy to use and everybody who actually tries it loves it.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I stick exclusively to the task in hand of getting you through this particular academic hurdle so that you can get on with the next phase of your life.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

30 years of private tutoring one-to-one and in small groups in Oxford, U.K., on all the UK G.C.S.E/I.G.C.S.E and A-level examination boards plus the IB. I have been tutoring online since March 2013 and as this has been a huge success I now teach exclusively online. The latter is nothing to be frightened of despite being 'new' - as you can see from my many testimonials most people prefer online tuition to face-to-face once they actually try it! Please note that as online tuition is now totally mainstream I no longer offer a free trial tutorial for those worried about this 'new' technology - however, time spent on setting up the initial connection and explaining how the system works (an average of 15 to 20 minutes for those not used to online tuition) is not charged for.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have an enhanced disclosure.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Good tutors are born and not made.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have an average of ninety students per year, of varying degrees of activity. Most see me once a week for extra lessons in addition to school or to retake specific modules. Most do A-level biology with one or two doing GCSE/IGCSE or IB. I seem to specialise in entry to medical school and have helped in excess of 80 students get into medical school, dental school or veterinary school over the years. I also teach many 'full-timers' doing their entire A-level course with me I have taught all of the current UK A-level Biology examination syllabuses with the exception of the new OCR (B) - namely OCR(A), Edexcel (A), Edexcel (B), AQA, WJEC, EDUQAS, CIE, IAL and CCEA as well as the IB.

I don't understand why some people are so against online teaching - I may have been a bit sceptical about it at the start but in reality it is a very efficient, effective, enjoyable way to learn. I got my place at Barts Medical School confirmed over the summer - I am very excited about the prospect of studying in London.

After receiving a B at AS level I contacted Matthew to push my grade up to the A required... I initially had face to face sessions, but quickly moved over to online tuition which I found far more convenient and a more effective form of tuition. The technical side of things worked perfectly online and saved much time on travel. The tuition itself was excellent. Online tuition is definitely recommended, not simply as a convenient alternative to face-to-face tuition but as an improvement upon it.

Having received a disappointing grade for Biology in my last year at school, I decided to get some tuition during my gap year... I was very reluctant at first to have online tuition but it turned out to be fantastic.... Online tuition meant that I could have the tutoring whenever and wherever I was! It worked perfectly and saved me a lot of time. With Matthew's help I have now gained the A grade and secured my place at Exeter University to start studying Biology this September!

I first started tuition sessions face to face with Matthew in late February after disappointing mock results. I was initially apprehensive about online tuition but when I was unable to make a few sessions I decided to switch and try the online option for convenience. I found it just as good, (well in fact better since it was much more convenient!) ... With Matthew's help and support, I managed to achieve an A* grade in A2 biology, and honestly can say I would not have been able to achieve it without him!

I would highly recommend Matthew as a tutor having studied the A2 with him this year. Everything was timed to perfection to prevent any of the learning feeling rushed. This always filled me with confidence. Despite being extremely apprehensive when I contemplated online tuition last August, a year on I would now recommend it to anyone! It really does feel like a face to a face session. I would urge anyone considering online tuition to give it a go! Thanks to Matthew I'm now off to study physiotherapy!

Matthew's approach to tuition is one of the best I have experienced to date. His teaching method opened my eyes to more effective and efficient methods of revision
Online tuition proved most convenient as it meant I did not need to interrupt my revision schedule in order to travel where Matthew was situated. Matthew aided me in improving my B grade at AS to an A grade in my overall A level and an A* grade in the module he specifically tutored me in. I highly recommend Matthew as a first class tutor...

Matthew is an excellent tutor. His unique style in teaching made it very easy for me to understand the work. I found that online tutoring with Matthew was very effective – I actually found that I preferred it to face-to-face tuition...it is very flexible and fits nicely around studies or a working day. Tutoring was done in the comfort and convenience of my own home, which made it easier to learn. It allowed me to look for the best tutors over a wide range of areas, not only restricted to my own area.

I was wary of online tutoring at first but after our trial lesson it felt completely normal. Having had face to face tutors in the past, it was just as effective on Skype and Scribblar ... This method of tutoring was much more effective than my traditional classes at college. Matthew has been an excellent source of help and support for me when I thought hope was lost, and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor in biology.

“I would strongly recommend Matthew Barnes as an online tutor. He is an experienced tutor, he explains things clearly and makes everything sound very interesting. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed... I am so glad I chose Matthew, since there is no difference from “normal” tutoring to online tutoring... One of the best reasons to go for online tutoring is that you can get the best tutors and not just the ones in the area. If you need a biology tutor Matthew Barnes is your man!”

Smooth, quick to connect and get started, well explained making it easier to understand things I found unsure in lessons at college , good diagrams , really helpful notes to revise from.
