I am a qualified maths teacher, and a highly experienced tutor, who for the best part of seventeen years, has been making difference to both pupils confidence and ability in maths. I have a long track record of making that difference to grades.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach maths at all levels, from the end of primary school through to the first year of degree. My specialisms are GCSE maths, and A level. Moreover I have considerable experience at a variety of differing papers and boards, which makes me very focused on what makes individual papers different, and spotting where likely questions are going to come form, allowing me to work out with each pupil strategies for their own needs.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a Cambridge Graduate in Social Anthropology, and PGCE (Cert maths), from Keele university.
- How much do you charge?
I currently charge £20 an hour for GCSE and £20 for A level
However if you are outside exeter I charge an extra £5.
- Where do you teach?
I am flexible where I teach. I have a space in my own own, but am more than happy to travel to your house, which ever is easy for you. I am happy to travel around Exeter in a circle, roughly bounded by Sidmouth , Ottery st. Mary, Credition, Chudleigh and Starcross. Beyond this range I might make special arrangements on a case by case basis.
- When are you available?
I am currently available both day time and evenings and in the weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
i pride myself in having taught all ages from from 8-80. I usually teach ages from 11-19, but have taught adult educations, and also sometimes a little younger, in special circumstances.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
My main teacher work is GCSE and A level. I have however taught 13+ and 11+ and KS4 and KS3, as well as a variety of adult courses and classes.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can teach by email, or skype. A have a variety of work sheets, that can be done be pupils and sent back to me, and can teachon a variety of video plato forms
- Do you have a personal message for students?
What matters to get through exam these days, is not maths so much as reading and writing mathematics. I place special emphasis on how one understands questions, and how one writes them down. It is this that actually makes that difference in both grades and understanding, and will turn those grades around!
- What kind of experience do you have?
After completing a PCSE in maths, I taught in schools in Staffordshire and Oxfordshire before moving to Exeter an becoming a full time maths tutor, which I have been for the best part of seventeen years, with great success. My specialism is making that extra difference to grades, changing D into B's and C into A's.
I have also taught at Exeter University, both maths and philosophy.
What I love about maths tutoring is that it is so different from maths teaching in school. one can make a real difference to a pupil, and give them not just confidence, but also the ability to know what a right answer actually looks like, and how to tackle the often different and wordy questions one finds in modern GCSE maths.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a current enhanced CRB
- Where and with whom did you train?
I did my degree as Keele university, and then my probation year in Oxford. i also taught for a number of years at Exeter university, and did a course on adult education there.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of the delights of Maths tuition is making a real and tangible difference - either shoring up rocky grades or (best of all), making that difference which turns B grade to A.. It is usually less a matter of maths, and more of confidence but also of who you read an question (maths questions need to to read in a very certain way) , and then how you map out an answer.
Matthew is a excellent tutor and has been a great help.
Matthew has been a tutor for my two children for three weeks. We are very pleased with him. he is polite and efficient and has a very approachable way with the children. Even my son who hates learning...
Matthew Made the difference! I was forecast a C, but eventually got an A
Matthews emphasis of showing one not only how one does maths, but also what mistakes look like, really helped me get my A
