Max - Cassiobury Park - Trumpet

I endeavour to make sure every lesson is geared towards the needs of each individual student. I am fun, patient and it is important to me to achieve a goal of allowing the student to flourish as a musician as well as finding their own way to play.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

All Brass instruments, music theory, conducting, musicianship, GCSE and A-Level Music. I also teach violin, recorder and ukulele.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I gained a BMus(Hons) from the Royal Academy of Music in 2014 as well as an LRAM for teaching brass instruments. I was a fellow of the Open Academy (outreach) for 2014/15. I have done an SEN Teaching course to support the work I do with special needs and have recently started a British Sign Language Course.

- How much do you charge?

Lessons are £40 per hour or £20 for half an hour.

I would charge extra to cover travel to you (of which would vary depending on how far you are from me).

- Where do you teach?

I can teach at the student's home but also perfectly able to teach at my home. I can teach all over London and nearby towns to Watford, St. Albans, Hemel Hampstead, Croxley, Rickmansworth, Chesham, Amersham, Slough, High Wycombe, Hillingdon, Chorleywood, Northwood, Pinner, Northwick Park, Moor Park.

I currently have students in: Watford, Radlett, Maida Vale, Hendon, Barnet, Harrow, Pinner, Hatch End and Shenley.

- When are you available?

Every week is flexible, but evenings tend to work better (especially those who are at school). I can teach in school holidays and also on bank holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I can teach all ages and abilities. All the way up to grade 8 and beyond.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for all manner of examinations including theory exams and diplomas, which I teach alongside the instrumental teaching as it is a key facet of becoming an all rounded musician. Qualifications will come from a process of immersion of the repertoire available to the student. I prefer to look at a number of pieces and then allow the student to select which pieces they would like to do in the exam.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am looking forward to meeting you and developing you into a confident and exciting musician.

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have had over five years of private teaching and much experience with outreach activities across london, some with the RAM Open Academy programme including work at Brixton Prison, Wider Opps, Southbank Centre, the London Sinfonietta and the English Touring Opera.

I have taught instrumental lessons since 2013 and have a broad range of experiences with a diverse spectrum of clients, including those with special needs and mental health issues. I currently volunteer at Woodfield School for children with profound needs. This is giving me some unique experience with children who need very specialised support.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes. I am signed up to the DBS Update Service.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at the Royal Academy of Music with Mark, David, Rod Franks, Andy Crowley, Paul Benison, Robert Farley, John Hutchins and Gareth Small.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

Incorporated Society of Musicians

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have many different students including those with learning disabilities. I am a very patient this has allowed me to focus on each student individually, tapping into how they feel at that time and not sticking to a rigid plan of teaching as it can put a student off if they don't have space within the lesson environment. The most important thing for me is that each of my students gains new things from every lesson. I have students that prefer to play along to backing tracks to music they are learning as well as those that struggle with the physicality of playing (but want to learn!) and so prefer smaller periods of playing with some other activities dispersed within the lesson.
