I'm a full-time professional maths tutor with thousands of hours of experience of providing effective 1-1 tuition. I have a Cambridge maths degree, an abiding love for maths and a passion to help students enjoy and master maths for themselves!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach A-level mathematics and further mathematics, including IB and Cambridge Pre-U.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MA in mathematics from Cambridge University.
Two of my three children have been through school and university and one is still at secondary school, so I've been engaged closely with the education system at all levels and understand what both students and parents are looking for to achieve academic success.
My family and I have lived in Cranleigh for over 20 years and I have connections with a number of local schools.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 an hour for tuition in Cranleigh. I'm happy to travel further afield, although I may agree an additional charge for travel.
- Where do you teach?
I'm happy to teach in my own home, or in students' homes in Cranleigh or up to 10 miles away in the surrounding area in Surrey and West Sussex, including Guildford, Horsham and Godalming.
- When are you available?
I'm available to teach at almost any time in the week, either on weekdays (daytime or evenings) or on Saturday mornings. Sunday is my day off!
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach secondary school students at A-level (including IB and Cambridge Pre-U).
I also teach mature students, and university students requiring maths to support other degree subjects.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Typically my students are studying for A-levels or equivalent. I've prepared students for exams from all the major exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA, OCR, OCR-MEI, Cambridge Pre-U and IB.
I also prepare students for STEP and MAT, and for numeracy or numerical reasoning tests including the numeracy skills test for prospective teachers.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
More than almost any other subject, maths needs confidence to be built, and a patient, individually tailored approach. Able students may need practice to strengthen problem-solving and eliminate errors, a more joined-up view of maths to deepen their understanding, and challenge to stretch their capabilities. Others find A-level maths harder going, and an imaginative and pictorial approach with plenty of real world examples is needed to achieve that "penny drops" moment.
I offer engaging and effective A-level mathematics and further mathematics tuition. If you want to succeed in your exams and also to deepen your appreciation of mathematics and have fun, then get in touch!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have thousands of hours of experience of providing effective 1-1 maths tuition. At peak times in the year I have more than 40 active students on my books.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes I do - Enhanced Certificate.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
At peak times in the year I have more than 40 active students on my books. Depending on the student, tuition may include any or all of: coaching to consolidate (or anticipate) teaching at school; revision for examinations; working through past examination papers; teaching and testing of specific sections of the curriculum; or more free-wheeling exploration of mathematical topics. By agreement with students and parents, homework may be set and marked.
If teaching in a student's home outside Cranleigh, I may agree an additional charge for travel.

Michael has been tutoring my son Toby in preparation for his A level maths. Whilst I don't profess to understand what is being taught, my son has given Michael nothing but glowing reports. He says that Michael has definitely helped in preparing him and understanding various topics that make up the A level maths syllabus. Michael has always been very flexible and accommodative in my dealings with him. A big thumbs up from us, and well worth every penny. (5/5)
My daughter has been having tuition with Michael for about 6 months and he is brilliant… She had a bad teacher and her confidence and maths level began to suffer. Since having lessons with Michael she has really regained her confidence and is consistently achieving high marks... He concentrates on making her understand the basics really well and why so she is able to approach any new questions very confidently. She is really happy with his tuition and I would highly recommend him.
Thank you very much for tutoring me and helping me build my confidence. I now feel able to tackle my up and coming exams to the best of my abilities. Thank you for all your hard work and support.
