I am a professional editor, proofreader and writer. I have a PhD in English Literature and have published works on different topics, both academic and creative. I teach and advise on different academic displines.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I proofread and edit manuscripts across most disciplines. I have a specialist interest in English Literature, Creative Writing and Religious Studies.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a PhD in English Literature (Lancaster University), a Master's degree in Religious Studies (University of London) and a 'first class' BA honours degree in English/Religious Studies (West London Institute). In 1991 I was awarded the Gompertz and Spalding prize for my contribution to scholarship.
- How much do you charge?
Prices fluctuate from job to job, but as a guideline you can expect to be charged around ₤10/15 per thousand words for proofreading, and ₤20/25 per thousand words for editing. When the word count goes up, the price comes down.

All my tutoring is now done online. I live in Lancaster in the north of England, but edit and proofread manuscripts from all over the world.

My availability times are most flexible.

I teach anyone, regardless of age, who needs help with their writing skills.

My students send me their manuscripts by attachment and I correct and return them, highlighting my suggested amendments.

Friendly and professional help is at hand.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught English/Creative Writing for many years in Higher Education. I now run a business for proofreading, editing and writing services.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Not applicable because I work online and have no physical contact with my students.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I received my PhD from Lancaster University.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My students come from all over the world. They are often undergraduate or postgraduate students; though I also receive much work from creative writers and various industries that require assistance with their writing.

As well as having an astute critical eye for the shape and style of an essay, Mick is a writer of compelling fiction, literary and genre, and a poet. His advice to students and creative writers is clear, accessible and incisive. He doesn't pull punches; he'll give you the advice you need and practical strategies you can apply to future work, too. I would recommend Mick wholeheartedly to both students and writers.
Mick was instrumental in enabling us to develop our arts publication. His advice and knowledge were invaluable in assessing submissions, and in providing editorial expertise that allowed us to produce professional articles as well and enabling contributors to get the most out of their writing. I was impressed by both his meticulous approach and his genuine passion for the work.
It was a great experience to work with Michael. I can only relate to what the other reviewers have said and highly recommend him. The pricing was more than fair and I received very high quality work. Will work with him again in the future.
