About the lesson

My name is Michael. I am 24 and teach Music Theory and Classical Violin to students of all ages. I am also a composer and songwriter and offer tuition in these disciplines. I live in Glasgow and would love to help you fulfill your musical potential!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach Music Theory up to Grade 5 (ABRSM or equivalent), and Violin Grades 1-8. I also provide Music Analysis tuition (starting at undergraduate level) and Composition and Songwriting tuition (all levels).

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have an honours degree in Music from Oxford University. During my time at Oxford I served as an Instrumental Scholar on the Violin, was President of the Worcester College Music Society in 2009/2010, and was concertmaster of Worcester College Orchestra. All my violin grades from 6-8 were passed with distinction by 2007, and I was awarded the Amina Lucchesi Prize for violin in 2007. I have completed my Master's degree in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, having been awarded a full Scholarship by the Conservatoire. I am a transcriptionist for Prokofiev's opera 'War and Peace', and a blogger for Industry Hotspot UK

- How much do you charge?

As a private tutor I normally charge £25 for an hour lesson, or £20 for half an hour. If I am travelling beyond Glasgow I will add travels costs to the fee.

- Where do you teach?

I am based in Glasgow. I normally come to the student's house, but can teach at home as well. I am potentially willing to travel as far as Edinburgh, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Motherwell to give lessons.

- When are you available?

During term time I am available for tuition on Wednesday evenings, Thursday evenings, Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. I am usually unavailable to teach over the school holidays of Christmas and Easter, and for a portion of the summer vacation.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I am willing to teach all ages from age 7 upwards. I teach violin grades 1-8 and music theory up to Grade 5. I teach songwriting to all ages and abilities. I teach music analysis starting at an approximately undergraduate level.

About Michael

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have substantial teaching experience as a private violin teacher and music theory tutor, with the ages of my pupils ranging from 8-15. I worked with special needs pupils as a teaching assistant at Down's View Link College from 2007-2008. As a composer I have had my works performed by a number of professional ensembles, including the BBC Singers, the Red Note Ensemble and the Regency Ensemble. As a classical violinist I have given solo recitals and chamber music performances in a wide range of capacities. I also work as a freelance violinist for weddings, funerals, ceilidhs and other social functions. I have worked with the composer Howard Goodall, and led a string quartet in a performance for Her Majesty the Queen. As a popular music artist I have recently released an album under the name 'Michael Aston' called 'The Slate'.
