Hello. I have a passion for music, love of teaching and a desire to help anyone of any age with anything music related.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
On the practical side, I teach keyboard, piano and voice; on the theoretical side I teach A level, GCSE and theory. I could also teach arranging, composing and conducting.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
My B.Mus (Hons) and PGCE are from the university of Cardiff.
- How much do you charge?
£35 is the hourly rate although 30 minutes (£17.50) is normally enough. Very young pupils may need shorter lessons and more than 30 minutes would be better for exam courses. I am happy to be flexible though ie 30 minutes one week, 45 the next.
- Where do you teach?
I live in Newport (South Wales) and teach from home. I am happy to travel to your house and could go as far as Cardiff, Cwmbran and Chepstow.
- When are you available?
Monday to Friday I would be available between 8am and 8pm; on the weekend this would be 10am to 6pm. I can teach through holiday periods also and will be flexible if possible.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
From 5 upwards. I can teach up to Grade 8, GCSE and A level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students for practical and theoretical exams with the ABRSM, TCL and LCM.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can use email to communicate and to send and receive work. My laptop has a camera which could be used for linking up directly.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
If you want to learn or need help I will do my best to encourage and support you. Music is not hard to understand and I can answer your questions in a suitable way. I look forward to hearing from you!
- What kind of experience do you have?
For twenty-five years I was a secondary school head of music which meant I taught across the 11-18 age range including GCSE and A level. At all levels the work was based around listening, composing and performing. Thirty years ago I started giving private tuition and returned to it in 2014. I am a bass baritone in the BBC National Chorus of Wales which has given me experience of performing at a professional level. I am now a peripatetic music tutor for Gwent and South Gloucestershire teaching keyboard, piano and voice.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a DBS enhanced certificate.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I started teaching piano to a year seven pupil last September, a complete beginner. Right from the off I could see she had ability so she has progressed very well and was ready to take the ABRSM prep test in May. She attended every lesson and practised a lot; once she was able enough she learned to play by ear which is something I always encourage.
Really great tutor. Helpful, patient and flexible with musical piece choices that would fit the pupil.
Miles is reliable, knowledgeable and patient. He takes the trouble to explain things in detail to my daughter and makes sure she is confident before moving on. He explains music theory along the way and will demonstrate what to do with exceptional playing ability. Has excellent repertoire of all music genres. Recommended!
