I established Byrne's Tuition ((concealed information) in 2008 - fulfilling a long-held desire to become a professional 1:1 tutor - specialising in supporting primary-aged pupils with their English and Maths and offering an 11+ coaching service.
To date I have secured places for my pupils at leading public and grammar schools including City of London Boys’ School, Westminster, Harrow, St. Paul's Girl School, North London Collegiate School, Highgate and Henrietta Barnett and my pupils have been awarded both scholarships and exhibitions.
As well as tutoring on a one to one basis, I also run regular, small group 11+ exam classes in 11+ English, Maths and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning in North London.
I am a highly experienced, UK-trained, primary and preparatory school Teacher, with with a specialism in English, and experience across several subject areas. I have taught in a number of prestigious, London day schools and most recently was hired on a temporary basis by Mr Baker at Wetherby Preparatory School in central London, a ‘Good Schools Guide’ school, for a period of more than two years, to provide extra, one-to-one, English support to pupils preparing for 11+ and 13+ English Entrance examinations.
As well as being a UK-trained primary teacher with extensive experience across both key stages, I also have the advantage of having spent two years as a primary, English as a Second Language Teacher for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where I provided intensive support to pupils aged 5-11 from overseas; this has given me particular skills in working with bi-lingual pupils.
From 2007-2008 I taught at North Bridge House Prep School in Regent’s Park, where I was one half of the English Department in the Upper Prep. I prepared pupils for 11+ and 13+ exams to St. Paul’s, City, Highgate, Harrow and other leading public schools. I made a decision at the end of that academic year to leave teaching in a school setting and fulfil a long-held ambition to become a self-employed tutor.
In 2007, I worked in a temporary capacity at Hill House School in Knightsbridge, being responsible for preparing a number of classes for their English 11+ exams to a variety of schools including Cheltenham Ladies College, Queen’s Gate School and Francis Holland. In 2006, I taught at St. Mary’s Preparatory Catholic School for Girls in Hampstead, London, one of the UK’ s top twenty prep schools. Whilst in this maternity-cover position, I provided English support to newly-arrived pupils from overseas, ran booster Maths and English classes before school and covered non-contact time for teachers across the school.
Up until December 2005, I taught for two years in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea in London as a specialist English as an Additional Language Advisory Teacher; the Language Development Service at RBK&C was regularly judged to be in the top three EAL departments in the UK. I worked as a peripatetic English teacher across schools in the borough with a large proportion of non-native English speaking pupils.
I have tutored pupils on a one-to-one basis for English Entrance Exams and Maths and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning at 11+ for the last 17 years. Whilst I am an expert entrance exam tutor for these subjects, I would nevertheless emphasise that I am also keen to provide my pupils with an excellent, all-round education, above and beyond the need to pass exams!
I am a highly professional, very experienced, organised, adaptable and personable educator with a wide breadth of teaching experience and of tutoring on a one-to-one and small group basis. My primary teaching qualification and English specialism is further enhanced by my having also gained, along with my primary PGCE, a PGCE at Further Education level in the teaching of English. I have also taught English as a Foreign Language to young adults and adults - another string to my bow - over the course of many summers over the last 20 years.
