« As a mum, with a daugher who was struggling to read at primary school, I could see the impact it was having on her confidence. Ellie was showing some dyslexic tendencies with constant substitutions made as she reluctantly read out loud to me. Instead of 'stream' she would read 'river', 'when' and 'then' were typical examples of her reading. It was not just reading stories but questions in different subjects, instructions and letters. And as for her spelling, it was another battle. I contacted Moya, after looking for a tutor online. We had a lovely chat about Ellie and Moya agreed to meet Ellie on a regular basis. This was two years ago. Moya used her experience and knowledge together with her proven success of a dyslexia programme that breaks down the different sounds in the English language. The homework sheets and revision cards created a solid learning platform. Two years later, what can I say? Ellie has grown into a confident person, knowing she can do it! Her transition into high school has been a positive one. I totally believe Moya with her planned one to one lessons have been invaluable. Moya got to know Ellie as a person, her strengths, weaknesses and way of learning. Moya encouraged her and congratulated her on each milestone, small or large! Ellie couldn't wait to show Moya her school reports and Sats results. Ellie can continue to grow in confidence and learn with the solid foundations in place and her special 'Moya' folder for future reference. Thank you Moya for everything. »

Moya - Coventry (Cheylesmore). 1:1 lessons in Literacy and Maths for Dyslexic Children aged 6-15 yrs.

Methodology

I teach reading, writing and spelling to dyslexic children in Coventry.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach literacy (reading, writing and spelling) and numeracy to children who have been diagnosed as dyslexic or have similar problems.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Bsc(Hons), PGCE, PGDip in Education(dyslexia). I have a degree and a diploma in dyslexia.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £28 per hour for daytime lessons (8:30 am-3.30pm). After school (3:30-4:30), Saturday and holiday lessons are £28. Dyslexic children work better during the day as they quickly become tired and therefore progress is better with daytime lessons. I always spend time with the parents before starting the lessons to find out all about the child's problems. This counts as my first free lesson. I like to give feedback after each lesson and will make myself available to discuss any problems if they arise. This is also free.

- Where do you teach?

I live in Coventry and I work from a special room in Cheylesmore (CV3 5HW). I do not travel to parent's homes.

- When are you available?

I am available during the day and holidays. I am willing to start teaching at 8:30 am and then I teach throughout the day doing 1 hour slots until 5.30.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I usually work with children aged between five years to fourteen years but I also have some experience of working with young people doing GCSEs, A-Levels and Degrees (at this level the help is with memory, study skills, organisation and proof reading). The pupils I teach have either been diagnosed as dyslexic or have similar problems. They have problems with literacy (reading, writing and spelling) and perhaps also numeracy. Other affected areas can be short term memory, concentration, personal organisation, sequencing and telling the time. Many children with dyslexia also have dyspraxia (clumsy child syndrome). They struggle to hold their pencils correctly and are affected by slow processing speed (slowness in processing information). A one to one teaching programme is invaluable to children who are not achieving their potential. I follow the Dyslexia Institute Literacy Programme and I seek to improve a child's reading, writing and spelling skills. The programme is a phonological programme. It is structured and cumulative which ensures the gradual introduction of word patterns and spelling rules, firmly based on previous knowledge. It is multi -sensory in that it uses many sensory pathways to the brain (sight, hearing, speech and movement). In this way the stronger senses support the weaker ones. Over-learning is achieved using cards, which are made for each new teaching point. These cards need to be practised every day and this takes between 5 and 10 minutes. Progress is slower if these cards are not practised. Follow up work may also be set to be done during the week. The programme may last one year to three years depending on the age of the child and severity of the problems.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Never give up!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I spent ten years teaching in a primary school, mainly in a year two class, before taking a position as a SENCO and at the same time doing a Post Graduate Diploma in dyslexia. Since then (for the past fifteen years) I have worked part time for a charity, catering for children with dyslexia and have also taught pupils privately. As I have worked almost exclusively with children who are dyslexic or have similar problems I have developed considerable expertise in this area.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes

- Where and with whom did you train?

As a trained teacher I went on to do a further years training with Dyslexia Action in Bath.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I belong to the Dyslexia Guild and the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS). I undertake about three days of professional development each year, mostly provided by the charity for whom I work part time.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

For the past year I have been teaching a twelve year old boy who left junior school unable to read and write. He sees me twice a week and recently he said: 'I can read. I never thought I would be able to read but I can' ! I looked at his mother and her eyes were filled with tears of joy. He is now able to do lovely cursive writing and he enjoys writing. The letters flow automatically from his pen. When I first met him he was despondent and depressed. He had little expectation of achieving, Now he is confident he knows he can succeed. I have also been teaching a girl of nine who was able to read but writing was a problem. She couldn't hold the pencil properly and her spelling was age equivalent six. After a year (I go into her school once a week) her reading is more fluent, her writing and spelling have both improved and the school says literacy is now her strong point.

I would definitely recommend Moya as a dyslexia support tutor. She is highly qualified and has many years of experience in helping Dyslexic students through her work at Dyslexia Action and private tutoring. She is kind and friendly and always wiling to go the extra mile to build confidence with her students.

My daughter now reads at the right level for her age, has lovely handwriting and is making excellent progress in all areas of literacy.
Moya Kirton is a very experienced teacher who develops a positive and successful teacher pupil relationship with the children.
I am confident that my daughter can reach her full potential and that she can overcome the challenges that her dyslexia gives her. Much of this will be attributed to the work Moya Kirton has done with her.

In year 2 George was really struggling at school, especially with reading and spelling. He has made fantastic progress in reading. We think the regular, focused one to one sessions have been the key . George's self esteem has greatly improved and we are certain that his work with Moya has played a huge part in this. It has also been a great help for us as parents to talk things over and have felt Moya to be a big support.

When Jak started with Mrs Kirton he would not put pen to paper or read and his confidence was very low. Since having all the extra tuition he now has perfect hand writing (the best in his class) and his reading has improved considerably and most of all his confidence is growing and growing. So to us as parents the money that we have spent has been worth every penny and we would always highly recommend Mrs Kirton if you have a son/daughter with dyslexia needs.
