Multi Instrumental Artist giving private Music Production Lessons at home in / around Thanet & Canterbury

Methodology

I teach Music Production (primarily on Ableton, Logic Pro X and GarageBand) DJ-ing, Podcasting, provide Consultancy and recommend Studio Setups for hobbyists to more intermediate artists and producers looking to improve their songwriting and recording abilities.

I give every potential student or client time to informally chat about their goals and how I can tailor the teaching to their needs.

I teach via Zoom or can meet at your studio setup if its within a reasonable driving distance.

Experience

I have a BA(Hons) degree in Professional Musicianship from Sussex University and over 10 years of live and production experience which has seen me perform at Glastonbury, Ibiza Rocks, Secret Garden Party and numerous other festivals in the UK and abroad.

My musical productions have been played and supported on national stations like BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music as well as appearing in high profile Spotify playlists (New Music Friday, Fresh Finds:Hiptronix) reaching over 1 Million total plays on Spotify with Sea Bed, a project I co-founded in late 2014.

In Spring 2018 I created Corbin Sound, a central hub for my private teaching practice and online content creation around popular DAW's Ableton, Logic Pro X and GarageBand.

Jim helped me to get to grips with a dodgy guitar pedalboard. He explained everything clearly and simply. Would recommend!

I started working with Jim in 2017 and he’s been at the core of everything I’ve done since from recording and mixing to setting up my ableton live project. He produced and mixed my band’s Inaktiv ‘Fire’ ep out on Dogs & Vultures Records and also worked on my solo project Via Tirana’s ep that’s out on Olimpiada Records.

His knowledge of sound equipment and software is second to none - and his session approach makes the whole process so enjoyable and creative.

Jim has taught me so much about music production that has been invaluable to me. His knowledge, communication skills and patience make him a fantastic teacher. When working with him as an engineer, he takes all the stress out of recording sessions and helps me achieve my best performances. He is multi-skilled and a talented musician. Always professional, always approachable, and so much fun to work with, I cannot recommend Jim Corbin highly enough.

Interview with James

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
James — I have been involved in music and the technical aspects of it for around 7 years now, finding that I was always more interested in the way a record is put together and the skills needed to create an entire track from my bedroom like many inspiring artists have done so before me. Since 2016, I found myself increasingly seeing people for my advice and beginning the early stages of what I would consider "tutoring" on Ableton, Logic Pro etc.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
James — Music Production nowadays is like wearing lots of hats. You have the engineer hat, the mix hat, the writing hat, the arranging hat and many many more all lumped together and my job is to teach people what these concepts mean and how to enter into them with a practical and methodical framework.

I usually like to start by seeing what students have done so far on their own, what techniques they are competent at and which ones are problem areas. From there, we can chat about the long term goals and find a path that benefits the student by avoiding any unnecessary tutoring on areas they are already confident in.

No topic is too problematic to discuss! It benefits both student and teacher if there is open, honest discussion about any topic being covered... Just don't ask me if I can teach you music theory in an hour.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
James — Too many to recall. I find inspiration from many people in and out of music who all have an effect on the way I teach production and the way I communicate to students.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
James — Honesty, perseverance, and belief.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
James — I finished my GCSE's with some respectful grades but deeply confused about what I wanted to be in life, where I was headed and many choices, I felt, were being made on my behalf by the education system.

Something inside me knew that I had to make a decision about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and from that deep abyss of that question suddenly music became the one thing that I knew I had to pursue in whatever capacity I could participate in it.

From there, I studied at BIMM in Brighton for 4 years and learned an invaluable amount of information on the music industry and the many highs and lows it can offer.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
James — Keeping up to date with EVERY new technology or technique people are indulging in.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
James — Finding what has the most positive impact on my life and those around me... and then trying to be better at it everyday
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof ?
James — My knowledge and patience. I have talked many students into not giving up when they felt their mountain was too high to climb, offering solutions and support to get them back into the music with enjoyment and inspiration.
