I possess a keen passion for teaching, and I am delighted to offer lessons in several musical disciplines to people of all ages and ability levels. I believe that the most productive learning environment is one that is encouraging and inspiring. In my teaching, I therefore endeavour to be as positive and as constructive as possible. I am methodical in my overall approach to pedagogy and the way I explain and demonstrate. My hope is that my pupils will not only be able to improve their technique, but also understand why a particular technique works or does not work. Furthermore, I recognise that every pupil has differing needs and aspirations. I always try to cater to those individual needs.

Andrew Leslie Cooper enjoys a multifaceted and multinational career as a countertenor, conductor, and keyboardist. The 2019-20 season represents his first as the new second countertenor in the acclaimed early music group The Gesualdo Six. With them, he tours domestically and internationally and records under contract with Hyperion. Other recent and upcoming ensemble engagements include Tenebrae, Gallicantus, Sansara, Ex Cathedra, and the Voces8 Foundation Choir, to name a few. Also active as a soloist, Andrew’s voice has been heard alongside Academy of Ancient Music, Academy of Sacred Drama (NYC), BWV: Cleveland’s Bach Ensemble (Ohio), and several choral societies around Kent. Andrew is Principal Lay Clerk at Rochester Cathedral and regularly deputises in other ecclesiastical choirs, most frequently at Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace, Canterbury Cathedral, and Westminster Cathedral. Before 2018, Andrew was based in the United States, where he was active with ensembles such as TENET, the Bach Choir of Holy Trinity NYC, Westminster Choir, Spoleto Festival USA Chorus, the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir, and more.
Andrew is passionate about amateur music-making and music education. While living in the States, he led amateur choirs as music director at the United Methodist Church of Berea (Ohio) and later Grace Presbyterian Church, Jenkintown (Pennsylvania). He currently works with Cranbrook Choral as Assistant Conductor/Accompanist and often leads choral workshops. In addition, he is a peripatetic music teacher at the Frances Bardsley Academy for Girls in Romford and at the King’s School, Rochester.
As a keyboardist, Andrew is in demand as a choral accompanist, collaborative pianist, continuo player, and church organist. In the past, he has worked as Music Director and pianist for professional theatrical venues such as Vermont’s Weston Playhouse and Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare.
Andrew holds a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College (New Jersey) and a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory (Ohio).
I have worked with Andrew since September 2018 and have found him to be wholly professional in his work that he does with us. He is a great singer and thereby can set a good example by demonstration. He is reliable and dedicated and I have no hesitation in recommending him as a singing tutor.
I have seen Andrew in various contexts, notably as a extremely accomplished musical performer and an excellent vocal coach. He is highly organised and diligent, and purposefully focussed on the goal. But he is also very personable, and perceptive and sensitive towards others, with a persuasive and engaging manner that suits him well to teaching situations.
