My approach is to develop your inner ear using a theoretical and practical approach. We'll work at a pace that best suits you, usually with a cup of tea in hand! I'm at home teaching all levels of music theory and can give you an insight from the perspective of a professional conductor. I will provide past papers, examples from scores and exercises to download and peruse at your leisure. We'll get a lot done each lesson but we'll have a jolly fun time doing it!
I have an MMus in Conducting from the RNCM and a MusB from the University of Manchester. I work with groups and individuals of all ages and a vast range of abilities. From professional to youth orchestra standard. I have been teaching violin and viola to students for over 3 years now and am now looking to expand and offer a unique approach to music theory from the perspective of an orchestral conductor!

I teach at my flat in the New Islington Area of Manchester. Parking just outside and round the corner. There is a tram stop nearby. I can also travel to you. We can alternate locations for each lesson depending on convenience.
My name's Alex. I'm a professional Conductor, Violist and Harpsichordist with an MMus (distinction level) from the Royal Northern College of Music and a MusB (first class) from the University of Manchester.
I teach Music Theory according to the ABRSM syllabus from Grade 1 up to Grade 8.
We'll use questions from Past Papers and Workbooks to allow you to practise the concepts taught in lessons and we'll begin the next lesson reviewing how you got on - after a cup of tea and a quick catch up, of course! We'll then explore the concept for the lesson (eg. Identifying simple and complex Chords, Melodic Composition, Notes of melodic decoration, Analysing Scores etc.) I will demonstrate concepts on the piano/viola and play your musical examples. Feel free to bring your instrument along with you and we can make our lessons as practical as possible.
I'm happy to teach any keen student of all ages and can prepare you for exams or teach more casually. I'm very flexible and will work to your intentions. Want to revise the concept again next week? No problem. Want to alternate between online and face-to-face lessons? Absolutely. We can work an arrangement out which suits you.
I have been having lessons with Alex for just over a year. Alex is friendly and patient and makes the lessons fun. He listens to what I want to do and gives me the confidence to have a go. His instructions are clear to follow and he gives useful tips on how to improve.
I have been playing for several years but have seen great improvement in my playing during the last 12 months.
I approached Alex for lessons in March 2020 and found him through an online search for a Violin teacher. I get nervous when meeting new people, but Alex made me feel comfortable straight away and I greatly enjoy our lessons.
He explains things clearly, and takes my personal goals into consideration for long-term lesson planning. Alex is calm, attentive and amicable during lessons and voices corrections or new information in a way that's easy to act on and to understand.
Alex supplies a good range of practice material between our lessons, and I feel he encourages and makes me aware of my strengths whilst also supporting and helping me build on my weaknesses in a way that always leaves me feeling as though I've made some kind of progress.
Very happy to have him as my teacher and would recommend to anyone looking to take up the instrument regardless of age or experience (as an older beginner myself) :D
