- My guitar teaching method is geared towards learning to play classical guitar, steel-strung acoustic and electric guitar. I specialise in helping people master the area of guitar that noone wants to go to, Music Theory!
- Lesson structure is based on video lessons or direct 1-1 lessons via Skype or similar platform.
- I prefer to have a 'strategy session' before lessons begin. This is to establish a goal or desired outcome and to agree a plan to get to the desired goal. Once lessons begin I will be monitoring progress with specific technical challenges that the student will need to accomplish in order to successfully achieve the goal.
I have a music degree from Goldsmiths College, London. I have been teaching guitar for 28 years.
I have taught in primary schools, secondary schools and I've taught adults. I have experience of teaching 1-1 lessons and in groups. I now teach online as well as in person.
March 2001 – Present
I began teaching guitar privately from my home in Brentford, Middlesex. In November 2003 I moved to my current address and continued to build a private guitar teaching practice. The majority of my private teaching takes place from 4pm until 9pm on Mondays to Fridays and from 9am until 5pm on Saturdays. I teach students on a one-one basis and many of them take practical examinations. Those students learning classical guitar have sat the Guildhall guitar examinations and those playing rock guitar have entered the Trinity College ‘Rockschool’ syllabus. I had a full practice by the summer of 2004 and began teaching my first group guitar class in September of that year. I currently teach five groups, one adult and two groups for the ages of 14-17 years and 10-13 years. All four of the groups have performed in public concerts that I have organized, the most recent of which took place on the 4th of December 2005. In September of 2005 I began teaching for the Ealing Music Service in Durdans Park and Ravenor primary schools in Greenford, Middlesex. In November of 2005 I began working for the Richmond Music Trust in Greycourt and the Russell school which are both in Ham, Surrey.
Berkshire Young Musicians Trust (BYMT) September 1996 – March 2001
At the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust I taught classical, jazz and rock guitar styles to children in the age range of 6-18 years. BYMT is an organization that provides music tuition of high quality to the majority of schools in Berkshire on nearly all traditional musical instruments. During my time working with BYMT, I spent 14 hours a week at the following schools in and around Newbury - Downs School, St Bartholomew’s, Park House and Trinity. At BYMT lessons were taught in groups of up to four pupils. Other responsibilities included giving talks and performing contemporary and classical pieces at the occasional open evenings that the Trust held to recruit new pupils. I also helped to run intensive four-day rock courses for up to fifty pupils where all pupils performed in a band at a professionally organised concert at the end of the course.
Shiplake College, Near Henley on Thames. 1991 – March 2001
At Shiplake College, a senior school for boys, I had been solely responsible for guitar tuition. When I began teaching at Shiplake there were 6 guitar pupils. This grew to 34 pupils within 2 years, which was over 10% of the total number of pupils at the college. Tuition was on a one to one basis and facilities at the college allowed the lessons to cater for classical, jazz and rock guitar tuition. I also helped with recording the pupils’ compositions for examinations and recording ‘demos’ of groups within the college. For the annual rock concert that took place in the summer term I helped the performing groups rehearse.
Queen Anne’s School, Reading. 1992 – July 2000
At this school I taught classical guitar to girls aged between 13 and 18 on a one to one basis.
