I enjoy incorporating any particular interests a pupil has into the learning process in order to make it as valuable as possible. My teaching method is multi-sensory and structured in style to meet individual goals in the most productive way.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I am an experienced English co-ordinator and Dyslexia teacher who has taught phonics and phonological awareness at Key Stages 1 and 2 extensively (I was previously a lead strategic phonics teacher in a London borough). I teach the nuts and bolts of English (phonics, reading and spelling) through a range of techniques including games to promote automatic retrieval.
As well as offering booster sessions in English to improve self-esteem, I specialise in supporting pupils who have specific gaps in their learning. Working together, we can identify these and turn them into achievable targets. This could be any area, from handwriting, reading speed, sentence writing or comprehension, to name a few. My degree in English has also enabled me to work with GCSE students supporting them in planning their English Language and Literature controlled assessments, an experience I have also found immensely rewarding.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
After teaching at Primary level for a number of years I took part in a 'Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia)' diploma (SpLD) in 2010 at the Institute of Education. This was sponsored by the Department of Education and endorsed by the British Dyslexia Association. The course (assessed at Masters Level 7) trained me as a specialist teacher, allowing me to carry out diagnostic assessments, write reports and deliver personalised teaching sessions to learners with dyslexia and other literacy difficulties.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £40 per one hour tutoring session. This includes a take home activity to consolidate skills learned.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from my Brighton home which is a five minute walk from Preston Park train station and very close to a number of bus routes on Dyke Road.
- When are you available?
I offer tutoring session at weekends, either Saturday or Sunday and may have availability for mid-week sessions during the holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach from 6 - 16 years of age.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Getting help with Literacy is a bit like finding a key that unlocks lots of doors - suddenly many different types of learning can feel that much easier! I'm looking forward to working together to crack the parts of Literacy that you find tricky and help your confidence to come on in leaps and bounds.
- What kind of experience do you have?
After completing the SpLD diploma in 2012 I continued to teach classes at Primary level but also focused on supporting pupils with dyslexia and other literacy difficulties on a 1:1 basis and in small groups. This enabled me to use my training to pinpoint specific, measurable areas for development and create a programme of learning tailor made to each child's particular set of needs. Seeing children's skills and confidence come on in leaps and bounds as a result of this has been fantastic!
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
My previous DBS certificate was for my full time teaching job. As I am not currently working as a class teacher in school and individual certificates are not available from the DBS, I do not have an up to date one at this time.
