Chess mastery should not be seen as one big area to work into, but smaller subsections to identify the root of the problem.
Example: Instead of the broad idea of improving calculation, we will work on the various smaller aspects such as visualisation, candidate moves, numerous tactical motives and many more.
My lessons are for students who are complete beginners to those who are rated 1800 FIDE. Lessons are targeted at those who are interested in bringing their game to the next level with proper guidance.
Lessons will be personalised to each student, focusing on their capabilities while rectifying their weaknesses. I would like students to send your most recent games as a starting point for us to discuss the areas we need to work on (for free). From then I would use quality materials and training methods such as "guess the move", training games and in-game analysis to broaden each students' understanding of chess.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and it will be a pleasure to see you on the other side :)
Bernard is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
I am currently a full-time freelance chess tutor. I started playing chess when I was five and with the help of my chess coach, I became the first National Junior Chess Champion from my region enabling me to qualify for the World Junior Chess Championship.
With this experience, I started coaching chess online with the goal of making chess lessons more accessible and personalised for each student. With over two years of teaching experience, I have taught more than 20 students with varying levels of success. For example, four of them went on to become tournament winners, but all of them found the lessons enjoyable and the learning experience worthwhile.
Feel free to get in touch and I will provide free chess tips regardless of whether you are interested in having lessons.

Chess Lessons. Bernard Chan May/June 2021
As a chess novice I was presented with a series of 5 chess lessons with Bernard as a birthday present. Bernard is clearly a highly intelligent young man with an advanced grasp of the game. He is also a huge fan and enthusiast. As a retired teacher myself I was particularly impressed with his ability to differentiate by which I mean to have the ability to tailor instruction according to the learners level of understanding. Given that he is unlikely to be teaching anyone significantly above his level then he has to be highly recommended. His insight, empathy and gentle prompting for learning were second to none. Either as a beginner or more advanced player I can’t imagine you could get better tuition than this.

Bernard is a dedicated and diligent individual who has a passion for helping people. His tutoring style focuses on exposing weaknesses and generating counter-measures for the improvement of your game. He tailors his tutoring style suited for different individuals based on their abilities, potential and personality in providing the most optimum and effective results. He is a passionate individual who doesn't just teach you as an obligation but out of a deep passion to improve your overall technique, mentality and morale in a chess game.
Bernard is a friendly and approachable tutor, who adopts a systematic approach to teaching chess. With this approach, he helps you to constantly improve and grow as a chess player. He has helped me improve a tremendous amount in a small space of time.
I met him through my university chess club and he started giving me chess lessons when I noticed he was a very strong chess player and he was a natural at teaching chess. I started out at around 120 ELO and I am now consistently performing in the 150-160 ELO range after just a few months of his tutoring. I would highly recommend him as a chess tutor.
I've found Bernard on Superprof, in search for a chess coach. He is very friendly and certainly knows his stuff. Bernard really enjoys teaching and it shows in every session I have with him. He knows how to explain chess techniques in a simple and enjoyable manner. Without Bernard as my tutor, I would have never gotten to where I am now. I am now one of the best in my university.
Great personality, I would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn or improve his chess skills.
