My lessons are for beginner to advanced levels, GCSE and A Level students, adult learners, for school, work, or even just for fun!
How does a class take place, you wonder? Here's a short overview:
Each class is tailored on the learner's needs and desires. I try different learning strategies, that I developed along the years, to find the one that suits best. In general, I make sure that we work both on writing and speaking in each session. We work on syntax, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Since French is a pretty difficult language when it comes to writing, I will not hesitate to take all the time you need to help you out with all of this. The conversation part focuses on pronunciation, speech rhythm, and oral comprehension. We may work on specific material if you have some at home, or I'll bring mine. I try to vary support and topics as often as possible; with my French and English students we speak about news, everyday life, cooking, travelling, events in the world, their job, their families, how to exchange in a professional context, politics, and everything they enjoy talking about. The aim is to train them to face different situations they are likely to encounter in real life.
I always keep in mind how hard learning, speaking and writing a language is. That's exactly what I studied in my two MA's theses and how I feel when I learnt and am learning languages myself. Many learners are scared to talk with a native speaker; remember, I'm not here to make you feel bad, but I'm here to support you, help you the best I can, and make you feel confident to show you how well you can do in French :)
Since October 2019, I am a French language assistant at Enfield Grammar School and Enfield County School (London). I train students from Year 9 to 13 for French GCSE and A-level. We work on their conversation skills, rehearse the vocab and grammatical structures they need to learn for their exams and to express themselves in general. I also create resources for our MFL Department, both in French and Spanish.
In May 2020 I started giving French lessons online to three adult learners, they are two professionals and a university student. Because of our lesson format, we focus on speaking and grammar. They learn French out of personal interest but also for work. We discuss various topics such as everyday life, professional life, news, travelling, future goals, family, hobbies, among many others. I now have a new student preparing for his GCSE.
From Sept 2017 to July 2019, I was a private English tutor in Paris alongside my studies. Most of my students were adult learners who needed to improve their English for work. We worked on all the skills assessed by the CEFR scale. Their level ranged from beginner to intermediate and all managed to improve at the end of the academic year. They had better linguistic knowledge in English for everyday life and in English specific to their professional occupation. I worked with a student in the French equivalent of Year 13 to prepare the English exam of the A-Level equivalent.
From Oct 2015 to May 2016, I was an English and Spanish tutor in Paris too and helped a student in the French equivalent of Year 10 with these two languages. Within this period she highly improved and got grades between 14/20 (70/100 in UK notation) and 16/20 (90/100) in both languages.
I pay a lot of attention to the relationship I establish with my students; learning a language should be fun and I do my best to set a friendly atmosphere so that we both have fun during the lesson while hardworking together! My students and I happily observed that they all managed to make real progress and reach the level they needed.
I graduated in a MA in English Linguistics from the Université Paris 7 Diderot, Paris, in July 2019, and was awarded Distinction. I'm starting my second year working in London as a French Language Assistant - which I absolutely enjoy! - at Enfield Grammar School and Enfield County School since October.
As I'm always willing to improve my language skills, I spent a month as a Summer student at the University of Toronto, Canada, to study English.
My BA was specialised in English linguistics, literature and culture. I did my third year as an Erasmus student in Turin, Italy, which was a great opportunity to learn Italian.
Perfect! Tanya has been brilliant working with my son for his GCSE. They've worked on how several tenses are formed and how/when to use them. She has really rebuilt his confidence in writing, listening and speaking French again. A big thank you!
André is a very smart - and witty! - student, which I have a great pleasure to support! He is really willing to work hard and easily gets the mechanism of each linguistic, and especially grammatical, point we deal with. He already has a very solid knowledge of French, and he keeps improving his writing speaking skills by adding on to what he has acquired so far. Also, he shows interest for the language, which allows us to go sometimes a bit further than required by the GCSE exam! I'm really glad to have met his mum Ann and to work with André, I have no doubt he'll be able to score very high for his exam!
Perfect! Tanya is a passionate tutor with an extremely patient teaching style.
Upon beginning tuition I only hoped to spark a once dormant interest to learn a language but after only a few months I've also developed a deep passion for grammar. I have learnt many new French words, understood sentence structure along with past/present/future tenses and my pronunciation has improved.
I'm very happy with all the support, I highly recommend.
Elle est géniale!
Aminat is very motivated and willing to improve her French skills. She shows a good understanding of the language mechanics and all the grammatical points we deal with, no matter how complex they may be! She keeps making progress every lesson and is now able to hold a long conversation about daily topics. She's a great, lovely, and very promising student. It's a real pleasure to teach her!
Perfect! She is very patient and encouraging. Tanya has an excellent knowledge of language and present the lesson in a structured way.
Chris already has a good knowledge of French we keep building on to reach his goal. He's curious about the language, which allows us to explore grammatical concepts and make his speaking even more accurate. His conversation skills are solid and we can easily talk about everyday life topics. He's involved, funny, and willing to learn, I'm always glad to teach him!
I took several lessons with Tanya over the course of a few months to brush up on my intermediate level of French, but had to stop due to work commitments. She was incredibly helpful, flexible with times and a delight to converse with which made me very feel very comfortable. She prepared thorough lesson structures, identified my weak points and helped to focus on these for me to improve my overall level and confidence. I hope to find the time to continue these lessons with her.
Très gentille, professionnelle, souriante, à l’écoute du besoin de son élève. J’ai eu une très belle expérience avec Tanya et j’ai fait beaucoup de progrès rapidement.
Je la recommande vivement !
Very kind, professional, smiling, listening to the needs of his student. I had a great experience with Tanya and I made a lot of progress quickly.
I highly recommend it!
