Neil - Elephant and Castle - Saxophone

I am a professional musician based in London.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach saxophone and music theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

MMus (distinction) Saxophone Performance - Royal College of Music
BMus (Hons) (1st class) Saxophone Performance - Birmingham Conservatoire

- How much do you charge?

£40 per hour, may be extra charge for travel.

- Where do you teach?

At students' homes. I am based in SE London, in Elephant & Castle, and am usually able to travel to destinations within a 10-12 mile radius.

- When are you available?

I am available Mon-Sat daytimes and evenings, and am flexible with my time. Many slots are already taken so please contact me for further information.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I am familiar with the ABRSM practical, jazz and theory syllabuses, and am also happy to prepare students for Trinity Guildhall exams. My feeling regarding examinations is that they provide a helpful focus for most students, but are certainly not essential, and therefore not mandatory! I am happy to prepare students for auditions, competitions and performances too.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

It is possible for music theory to be taught online, via the means of scanned work and email correspondence.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Saxophone is an amazing instrument, it has immense flexibility and a vast range of tonal possibilities. Learning an instrument is great fun and should be an enjoyable experience. My lessons are varied and stimulating, covering all sorts of different music.

- What kind of experience do you have?

Eleven years teaching pupils of all abilities and ages including complete beginners and advanced students. I have taught masterclasses at Birmingham University and Trinity College of Music (the latter as part of Syzygy saxophone quartet). I have examined for undergraduate and postgraduate saxophone performance exams at Birmingham Conservatoire.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

- Where and with whom did you train?

Kyle Horch (Royal College of Music) Chris Gumbley (Birmingham Conservatoire) Claude Delangle, Vincent David, Arno Bornkamp, Christian Wirth, Fabrizio Mancuso, Jean-Denis Michat (European Saxophone University, Gap, France, summer course) Mike Williams, Andy Tweed, Naomi Sullivan, Fredrick Hemke, Simon Haram, Alistair Parnell, Otis Murphy, Timothy McAllistair, Nobuya Sugawa, Christian Foreshaw, John Harle, Rob Buckland, David Roach, Richard Ingham, Debbie Buckley, Christina Thompson, Brian Winter (occasional private lessons/masterclasses)

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently teach a number of students at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama junior dept, Lady Eleanor Holles School, Tower House School for Boys in Mortlake, Bousfield Primary School, South Kensington and Hindhead Music Centre, Surrey. I also have private pupils most of whom I teach on a weekly basis. Abilities range from complete beginner to post-grade 8.
