I usually tend to approach lessons by going through the background of the topic in focus and a few worked examples before giving students questions to answer themselves and going through worked solutions. Independent practice is a key part of becoming stronger in a subject, and the more a student practices, the better they will get, and this is a truly rewarding feeling. Throughout lessons, I work with a highly friendly, approachable and patient approach to tutoring, as it is vital to ensure that my students feel comfortable to ask questions on whatever topic they may have difficulties with. In addition, students should never be afraid to ask for further explanation if they do not understand a concept the first time around, as many concepts can be difficult to grasp initially and this is why it is so important to encourage students to ask questions whenever they feel like it.
Furthermore, I aim to be as concise in my explanations as possible and I like to break down problems into manageable chunks. For example, I encourage students to underline keywords in questions and, particularly in maths and science, to draw diagrams to help them visualise problems. When it comes to exam technique I teach students precisely how to answer certain styles of question to score full marks and show as much working wherever possible. This is not only a very important skill to have to get good grades, but it will help them develop more of an understanding of the problems they are solving.
Hello! My name is Avishan, I am an undergraduate physics student and I am extremely passionate about everything mathematics related. I have achieved A* and A grades in mathematics throughout GCSE and A-Level, and I am also a capable and enthusiastic teacher of KS3/GCSE/iGCSE Science as well as English, having attained A*/A grades in those subjects myself too.
*IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to the Covid-2019 pandemic, lessons will take place online via Zoom instead of in person for the time being.*
Prior to starting my physics degree at university, I worked as a teaching assistant/tutor at a secondary school during my gap year, and I am continuing tutoring whilst at university as I genuinely admire teaching maths, amongst other subjects and I love having the opportunity to show students how exciting learning can really be. During my time teaching at a school, in addition to teaching students on an individual basis, I took on the responsibility of teaching small classes myself, and I was also a mentor to a group of Year 11 pupils, having helped them with GCSE revision every week.
Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss things further, such as availability, or if you have any questions!
I recommend Avishan based on her own success and tenacity as a student and her ability to overcome hurdles. She is well placed to understand the requirements and challenges of current maths curricula and she has experience in teaching secondary school students both at home and in the classroom. She has a patient and clear way of explaining things. Great asset and support to any student!
Avishan is a fantastic and friendly tutor who takes her time explaining things and is very motivational during lessons. I highly recommend her for her expertise and passion for teaching.
I knew Avishan in the capacity of her academic advisor at university. I have since moved to a new position but have kept in touch. Avishan is a motivated and hard working student, achieving good results. She is enthusiastic and approachable and can explain things clearly and effectively. Therefore I think she will make a very good tutor
Miss Avishan is a very enthusiastic tutor with positive reinforcement. She's patient and a good listener. She always encourages you to accomplish your work and make sure you understand the task. She's punctual and has never cancelled any of my sessions at the last minute. She's very respectful when it comes to time. Miss Avishan helped me to build self-confidence and strengthened my self-esteem when she shared her own experiences about what she has encountered in life. At the end of the sessions, I was looking for the next one.
