My role a secondary school pastoral tutor, spans over twelve years to support targeted students who were underachieving and students who had been excluded on a permanent or fixed term basis. I worked alongside the Deputy Head Teacher, subject teachers and support staff. My role involved securing alternative education, one to one tutoring and mentoring. Along with my colleagues, we provided homework club at lunch break and after school which gave all students the opportunity to take advantage of the school facilities and support. The students appreciated the support outside the classroom as it gave them a more relaxed atmosphere. I also supported upper school students in their GCSE revision clubs after school and sometimes during school holidays.
My experience in mentoring gave me the opportunity to build very good relationships with the students I supported and their families.
The students I taught range from Year 8 to Year 11. In my role, I was responsible for the pastoral care of each student in the Year group (of 230 students) I was assigned to.
As a result of my support to many targeted students who were underachieving, it was a pleasure to witness them achieving grade higher than predicted and have gone on to further and higher education; nursing; teaching abroad; professional football and much more!
