My previous tutoring experience has been with secondary school students - ranging from year 8 to sixth form - and so I would say I am best equipped to tutor at this level. My particular areas of strength for tutoring would be in close textual commentary, as well as understanding criticism and examination or revision technique. I think the most important aspect of the tutoring process is to encourage and affirm a confident - whilst nuanced - personal reaction in the student to the text, whether it be a poem or an article. To achieve this I aim to equip my student with a useful 'toolbox' of critical techniques which they can use to approach a text.
Rates may vary dependent on the travel arrangement for the tutoring, however this can be discussed specific to the situation.
I am currently loving an English literature degree at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. This course is comprehensive of English literature - spanning from the 9th century to the present day - so I'll be equipped to tutor on any weird or wonderful text or topic you throw at me! During my time at school I obtained A* grades in English literature at GCSE and A level, and have a good knowledge of the requisite exam technique for both of these exam formats, as well as the Oxford entrance exam.
Academic institutions and qualifications
- 2009-2016 - attended Magdalen College School on a Major Academic Scholarship. In 2014 I obtained 9 A*s and an A at GCSE level, including an A* in English Literature and in English Language. In 2016 I obtained an A* and 2 As at A level, including an A* in English Literature.
- 2016-present day - studying English Literature at St. Catherine's College, Oxford University. My degree is not yet completed but in the first year examinations I obtained an equivalent 2,1 mark.
Relevant employment history and volunteering
- 2015 - As part of a volunteering programme I gave a struggling year 8 student tutoring for a period of 6 months, assisting them with their English, as well their revision technique and organisation of work.
- 2017 - C.I.E Oxford, Oxford, 2017 – I taught a group of Japanese students for daily three-hour sessions across two weeks – assisting them with a project on Multi-Culturalism in England. I took the students out on trips around Oxford, and assisted them with their English and presentation skills.
